For those of you who are interested, we went out there yesterday and the pits have been excavated recently so a lot of new stuff is turned up. Found some beautiful samples. Easy to find spot and can't go wrong(everyone will find stuff)

turn north at the RR tracks just east of Vernon. I went out there last year, and came home with some awesome samples. I wanna take the boy out there soon and let him find some cool rocks.

Yep vernon.
drive 4.5 miles out past the silver sage(after getting a smothered burrito). Just before the tracks, you can't miss them, go left(if coming from vernon side going toward eureka). go 1.7 ish miles and follow the main path of the road left and you will see the pits. they are reddish in color. I marked GPS coordinates, but you really don't need them.

Do we actually have some rock hounds on here? My last trip to Vernon picture stone was 5 years ago and got some good stuff but not jewelry grade so I just cut and look for unique pictures. Got some yellow jasper at Eureka that was great for the jewelry.

I am a fledgling rockhound. I used to go with my grandpa when I was little, but never learned very much except I like to smash rocks with a hammer. I think this is partly what led me into geology. Anyway, my wife and I like to explore and rockhounding is a reason to explore with a purpose. I hope to get better at it. I think she wants to hit the geode beds and topaz mountain next.

We go rockhounding quite often. We have collected garnets, topaz, geodes, quartz crystals, horn coral, septarian nodules, petrified wood, calcite crystals, smoky quartz, wonder stone, fossils, and lots of other rocks. Our last trip two weekends ago was a fossil tour of Millard county where we visited the trilobite beds, indian pass, foote mountains, cowboy pass, conger springs, fossil mountain and crystal peak. Of course we ran some of the 4x4 trails nearby to keep it fun for the kids.

I originally got into 4 wheeling to go rock hounding and exploring until it became the prime sport for our family. Where did you get the septarian nodules? I heard there was a place over by 5MP but don't know where. Is there a hock hound club anyone would recommend? I have all the lapidary stuff and have made quite a bit of jewelry for my family.

The septarian nodules came from the Orderville area. 5MP would be alot closer if I knew where to go. I also have lapidary tools but need to use them more. I might try polishing some of the fossils we found. I would also like to make some jewelry for my wife and daughters but I have never been much of an artist.

There is a bed in delta you don't have to pay for. Also you can go just along the border of the claims and collect. They are pretty cheap though even if you do pay. If anyone knows any other sites I would like to know them as well.

That map is the greatest. Just realized after looking at the map that I never got to the main diggings at Dugway. Thanks

I agree, and this is the best time of the year. A nice weekend trip would be Topaz and Dugway. I would be available the 1st and 15th of May for what ever is decided.
