heh

I typically either capture from firewire with Nero Vision Express or Composite with either VE or my ATI software. I capture it in "DVD" or mpeg2. Then I run it through Gordian Knot and encode to Xvid. Then you can use nandub and trim it. Everything from G Knot on is far superior, light weight and fast.... but as mentioned, there is a learning curve.

Download G Knot from http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/software.htm
Grab the G Knot rip pack and codec pack

You can also search torrents for vegas and get that. Although its not great you can make small and fast with good picture quality and have lots of option for personalizing it. But vegas takes forever to render and I mean forever.

But I agree nero is amazing. Even pro tools is great. Until recently thats all I used till my brother got me onto nero also if you're a music person both programs are freaking awesome for mixing/mastering.
