Yep, to bad we can't live with the thought of some kind of education reform here in our great state.
You have to get the teachers to stop brainwashing the parents and their children into thinking there is nothing wrong with the public education system...JUST GIVE EM MORE MONEY...and all their problems will be solved!!! MORE MONEY!!! Because we all know that throwing more money at government programs that are faltering always fixes things!!

I wouldn't be adverse to some education reform. I think there needs to be some. There needs to be some accountability for teachers and along with that I think there should be some kind of parent/student review that has some teeth re: the teachers next year contract. I'm sure that'll never happen, but it sounds nice.

I didn't vote for the proposal because it just didn't sound logical. I like the concept, but the execution sucked and I never did get all the details. Just a bunch of rhetoric. I'm for anything that flips the bird to the NEA and the UEA, but this just wasn't the right thing.

We went into this in the other thread... but lets do it here.

What is so "wrong with the public education system"??? What did they do to fail you Spencer? Is your chemical imbalance and loose toungue the result of poor teachers or curriculm? I just don't get it... I didn't feel failed for a single minute. I've had hundereds of teachers/professors at this point in my life... The only ones that stand out as complete deadbeats are classes I was paying $$$ to attend in college.

Lets hear it... how did public schools fail you? (this question is for anyone that was "failed" by public schools) Those that reply, I would love to know what kind of post-highschool education you participated in, what kind of honors, AP, clubs, sports, etc that you took advantage of as well. All part of the equation.

x2 I know my teachers in high school cared about my education much more than I did. In college I had teachers who preferred you didn't go to class, so they didn't have to go. While I feel that there is constant need for improvement in schools; all schools public or private, this voucher bill isn't the way to get it done.

Well, ok. We have 3 daughters. The first two went to good ole Lehi High School. If you have never been there you are missing out. Their experience was just god aweful. Sent the third to private a private school in Provo called Meridian. Cost a fortune but she is now in college at the age of seventeen. Our first dropped out of high school, second barely made it. I love uniforms, way cheaper than buying a million clothes for the kids to be hip. You can't tell me that education is the main focus in public high schools? In private schools the parents HAVE to be involved, they have to participate in many of the school functions. Public school, parents don't have to do squat so most don't, they don't know what is going on down there.
That is my experience.

Don't get me wrong, it needs to be improved... but what doesn't. Vouchers were not the answer. If anything the entire debate has brought more attention to the issue. If any brainwashing has taken places its those that truly beleive public schools are a failure IMO. Get a grip and hop off the bandwagon... if you failed in school... you failed yourself... I'm sure the rest of your life will indicate a track record of failures, be it jobs, marriages, family relationships, etc... its really easy to use the old scapegoat "public schools failed me".

So let me get this right... a school caused your kids to drop out. What did the school do to cause this. I'm sure Lehi has plent of sucsessful students that go onto college, etc. In fact I would be willing to bet the number of students that graduate is in the 90% range. The question for you is why did your children not? Lehi has honors classes, advanced placement courses, etc. What went wrong? I don't see how a school can fail a child... its all about learning and learning to suceed is as (more) important than geometry.

You can't tell me that education is the main focus in public high schools?

I can, I learned alot... There are alot of forms of education that I feel is crucial in this world of ours. Failure is one of them... failing yourself is another. The social skills, peer pressure, drugs, etc are all part of the learning. But I'm sure your kids didn't get to take their textbooks home with them, so there was no way to learn on their own (or with parent involvement)

In private schools the parents HAVE to be involved, they have to participate in many of the school functions. Public school, parents don't have to do squat so most don't, they don't know what is going on down there.

Your proving my point here. Your absolutely right... in a private school have a vested interest ($$$) so they do care more... the fact you didn't react until you "had" to doesn't mean the school failed, it means you failed IMO. I don't mean to come across as rude, but honestly your not convincing me public schools fail, quite the opposite in fact.

Certainly this fact is making them fail themselves.

The report suggests low per-student spending — peer states spent an average $8,251 per student, about $3,000 higher than Utah, the report states — teacher quality, curriculum, even cultural attitudes toward achievement could be factors. Kroes suggests Utah's class sizes, the highest in the country, also may be a factor

There are a lot of things I would have changed looking back on it. I do take a whole lot of responsibility for one of my kids dropping out. I am not blaming it entirely on public schools, but we can't be so nieve and say we are just failing ourselves, that is ludicrous.
