VW offroad tech??

Hey I'm new to the offroad VW stuff, anybody know where can I go to learn some tech on these.

I'm reading HPBooks Baja Bugs & Buggies
Bill Fisher's How to Hot Rod Volkswagen Engines
How to Keep Your VW Alive by John Muir

and they are all great but I'm stumped on a few things

also anyone know some local shops?

FWIW, if you need parts there is a place in Stockton here that has a bunch of VW's, they were offering them ALL for sale a couple years ago, so they might be really cheap.

I need an air cleaner
a solex carb rebuild kit
a different (high clearance) exhaust
oil filter and oil cooler
and a fuel tank/cell/keg the stock tank kinda scares me.

I want to try to fire it before I start the cage.
