Got myself a new MIG welder and I'm dying to weld on my YJ. Aside from just running beads down the frame rails for practice, I can't think of much to do and am trying to figure out why I bought the damn thing. ;)

Help!

NOOOOOO. :D You missed the point. It has to be something functional/useful/utilitarian and it has to be a part of or become a part of the heap (did I say heap? I meant Jeep.)

Anybody have any links to welding projects for jeeps like how-to's on making your own shock hoops, rear tire swing-out carrier/bumper, rock sliders, skid plates, bumpers, winch guards, etc?

if you have to ask for sources of ideas, should you be welding.

do a search on the web it will yeild all sorts of crap.

You're right! I have to ask for "sources of ideas", so I should not be welding!

That's it! I'm selling my welder and my Jeep. What was I thinking?

...damn James....you OK?...you seem a little "on edge".....hey H-K you got any ideas at all of what your missing...."help us help you" :D

Love the fro BTW. Want to make some rocker guards that are bombproof, but don't look too ghetto and don't cut down on clearance. I also heard that welding some small pieces of plate onto the shackle mounts fixes a weak point, but I haven't seen this done and was hoping somebody had some good info. Some skid plates might be nice, if somebody knows some simple designs...shock hoops...tire/gascan carriers...

Just looking for ideas for the YJ. Trying to evolve from a bolt-on guy to a fabricator guy, starting out simple.
thanks

Why???? It's always a good idea to put alot of heat and useless weld on a frame, NOT!!! GO GET SOME SCRAP STEEL!!!

Andy

LOL ::sigh:: Notice the WINK at the end of the statement.

Andy, it was a joke. I'm not really going to run practice beads down my framrails. :)

I take it you don't like stingers. Arent' you the guy with the cool blue buggy with toy axles and a ... stinger? It said "Vonski" on the side. Maybe my memory isn't too clear ;)

How much welding have you done in the past? They are telling you to start with scrap steel, so you don't fawk up your Jeep. A welder is not like a wrench, it's not a good idea to just go out ad buy one and start boogerin up your rig.

Here's an idea, make yourself a swingout tire carrier. BBowski did and excellent write up on the one he built. You can get the parts you need at Rocklogic.

Thanks Hickey, I'll do a search for his writeup.

To answer your questions, I actually took a welding class before I decided to buy my welder. I'm still an amateur/beginner, and have about 100 hours behind the gun. My beads look good with good penetration, and I realize that I need more practice. I am careful and safety-concious. I didn't mean to give everybody the idea that I really just went out and bought a welder and wanted to start welding on anything metal that moves. I thought the WINK smiley would convey my sarchasm, but apparently it was missed.

I have already boogered up my Jeep anyway. ;) (note the wink, everybody)
I installed a hockey-puck lift (another joke, it was a body lift kit). A couple of "nuts" stripped and so I had to cut open the floorboards, weld in some nuts and weld the floorpan back together. It turned out well. I also welded a brace onto my rear axle: http://www.rockymountainextreme.com/showthread.php?t=9121
So, this is the extent of what I've done on the Jeep with the welder.

EDIT: I found his post about the carrier, but didn't see a complete writeup, although there's some good info in there and that carrier looks nice -- I like the design.

Maybe I am too. Long day

...I was just giving James some crap :D ....but you should have worded you question more like " hey I wanna build some sliders.....bumpers...and a tire carrier for my jeep...anyone have links to writeups?." or something like that... you would probably get more help and less sarcasim.. ;) IMHO

I really have nothing against most. However, I do tend to make fun of the rediculously huge ones and the reasoning behind them. Ah, to each their own I suppose...

As for the blue buggy, that would be Carl's. I assure you, it has always been "stinger deficient". :)
