So we have a project at work and are looking for a high quality web cam. We don't need video aspect of it, but rather the still photo aspect of it. Any suggestions on decent web cams?

It doesn't matter, if we find the ideal camera for $500, then we'll pay it. Ultimately we'll be needing probably 20-30 cameras plus some extras to keep on-hand. For now we'll jus tbe getting one for testing though.

What are you going to be using it for? (indoor, outdoor, motion, etc)

I've got a logitech webcam that takes decent indoor pictures but doesn't work if it's outside. I'm not much help in the webcam area, I've got one and it does what I need it to. If I was doing something where I needed high detail I would probably just buy a digital camera and hook it up as needed or use a memory card reader.

It'll be indoors in a warehouse setting. No motion shots, only stills. I suggested the digital camera route right off the bat but apparently what they are planning to do won't work with a regular camera (I don't buy it, but whatever).

Like Spork I have a logitech webcam as well. It sits on my desk at work for night time security, but it you want to borrow it for a few days to try some photos with it you are welcome to it. Indoors and with good light the photos are ok, but not quality. At night they get pretty grainy.

Thanks, that's the kind of feedback I'm looking for. What they are trying to do is setup these cameras on each of their returns stations, when they process a return they will take a picture of the condition of the item, so if there is a dispute they have documentation of the item. They are going to completely rewrite one of their apps for this. So they are wanting fairly high quality photos and being it's in a warehouse, the lighting is less than ideal.

Honestly, I don't think it will work and will take too much time to be worth it. They are going to kill their productivity trying to save a few pennies.

what is the distance they are looking for? If you want some photo samples I will try to duplicate the distance, and some sub-par lighting conditions to see if these will even work for you.

I also have a cheep web cam. It is branded as Xtatix, but I am sure the same thing can be found in other branded boxes. It does have little infared LED's that will help it take better photos at night or in the dark. It also has to be focused and if you focus it for 6 feet it is almost un-usable for 9 feet. But maybe this will work in your application as long as the focal distance will not change.
