A 4 cylinder with an auto could be good for rock crawling, (light, good gas mileage, high rev) but the auto will eat up to much power that the 4 popper does not have to spare on the road. You can swap a 4.0L in it. I swapped a 4.0L AW4 and the NP231 out of a Cherokee in my YJ. It was not hard, however you will need good wiring diagrams from the donor vehicle and yours. It will take some time and fab skills to do it right. If you can find a good deal on the donor vehicle it is not to bad. But if you do not have the know how and have to pay someone, it will cost some bucks. It is better to find a good deal on a used jeep that has the right stuff in it already, it will be cheaper than building one.
