I really don't know much about this axle, except that it is 27 spline. Is anyone running one successfully with a locker or spool or welded?

My wife has an 8.25 in her XJ and we have been hoping to lock it soon. I know locker selection is limited, anyone know for sure what lockers fit it?

I think you'll be fine with 33". I ran my D35 with 33" (gingerly). Spare parts would be nice to have, though.
may wanna pick up some shafts carrier and r/p from a 29 spline. Many guys have been running 35's geared and locked on the 29 spline with no problems at all. For the 29 spline options for lockers are basically powertrax, detroit and arb, and lincoln of course
