Welding goggles

I recently picked up a portable welder for trail repairs and wanted to use goggles instead of a helmet because a helmet would take up a bunch of room and roll around. Is there any reason not to use goggles for mig welding besides getting your face sun burned if you weld too long? The reason I ask is the 10 shade goggles I picked up say do not use for mig, tig or arc so I thought maybe it was a different scale for gas welding so I looked through a lens for a arc helmet and they look identical. So I guess the question is would they be alright for trail repairs and not full on welding? Thanks

Skin cancer would be a good reason.... Goggles are only protecting your eyes, the rest of you is exposed to the UV light. There are some hand held face shields that would work in a pinch.

I carry goggles with my Readywelder. Don't worry, as long as you carry your welder, you won't need it. You'll only be lending it to other people to fix their broken junk, so whatever eye protection you provide them is more than generous. :)

A bandanna works good for protecting your face.
X2 the goggles are most likely for oxy-acetylene welding using a bandana and a hat im pretty sure you'll be set. I have seen pictures of someone using sunglasses and a piece of a cardboard box when they were Stick welding... so there is defiantly worse you could do... something is better than nothing..

I used 3 pairs of sunglasses once. Not enough shade. but the fix was done and no walking was involved.

I did 4 pairs of sunglasses and it brought the suck.. kinda hard driving on that sunny snow covered day afterwords.. but I second the bandana and the goggles - thats what is in my rig now :)

There are some 'soft' face shields out there, as I recall they had solid goggles and then a leather based hood. Light and easy to pack yet offers the protection you want. I'd like to get something better for my trail kit too.

I would just pack one of the cheap hand held ones i have one that came with my MIG welder, they are light and don't take up as much room but still offer full protection

All good suggestions. I have seen the face sheids but worried about holding it up with one hand and not having one free. I think a bandana and hat or a face sheild would do the trick. I like the idea of putting the goggles in the welder case. By the way Harbor Freight had the goggles 2 for 5.00 with one being flip up with safety lens underneith. Made in Tiawan but all the Lincoln stuff is in China so it can't be too bad. Thanks for the replies.

Knock on wood, that is what will happen. I've always had others in the group need one and no one had one so I decided to pick one up.

Now you'll have the joy of people you don't know using up all your consumables without offering to replace them.

With all the people I've helped out I'm beginning to think that's the American way. :(

That's better than when they use $50 worth of your supplies and then they offer you $5 though. :-\

I like what cruiseroutfit show'd a pic of. Not only is it easy to pack and good protection but won't let those little red welding bugs burn your head while you weld:D
