So I get my Scrambler back from Six States. It was there to pull the axle shaft that is bent so we could Id it. The bill-of-material number was not there so they pulled it and measured it. Turns out that the Dana 44 that I have in the rear is actually from a Scrambler. The only year they made a 44 in a wide track is 86. So, the previous owner must have looked everywhere for this hard to find axle to replace the amc20 that haunted the jeep in years past. Today I wish I had that amc20 back. No-one makes that shaft anymore! I don't know how I'm gonna find a replacement. The guys at Six States seemed almost down as well, realizing that it would be hard to find. Here's my cry for help..... What do I do?

How much wider is a wide track than say a Scout 44? It might be easier to just source and swap a rear Scout 44 in there? I know they are a little narrower than a XJ D44 that's roughly 60". I'm thinking the Scout unit is about 58" or 58.5"?

You really would rather have a 20? WOW. There has to be 1000s of people that will trade you their 20 for your 85 CJ 44 even with the bad shaft. Probably a few on this board.
You will be able to have a shaft made just start looking.

Not sure I asked that question too and six states didn't know. They are on the look out for me. I think a scout is a bit wider. I need to find the dimensions again so that I can see what are some other options. Six States did mention getting one made or cutting a longer one and re-splining it. Dutchman seems to have that down. Their office was closed and couldn't leave a message. Have you used them JamesK?

Yup, There's no sense in having shafts that can break or bend because no-one makes a replacement. The shaft has been discontinued. If you see an 86 cj in a junk yard let me know.
I want to fix something when it breaks.

I would imagine Randys(Yukon) can cut and spline one for you. but for the price of custom shafts you can probably get you a xj, waggy, or scout d44, be carefull there is a rare scout rear d44 also. dont go back to m20, I had one and bent and spun the tubes with 33's.

That's my fear, I could part out the axle get a burlier one and be fine. I don't want to be stuck in an odd ball set up. I don't have tons of cash for custom jobs.

Call Craig S. on here he can get you an alloyusa shaft and you won't ever have to worry about it again. Very resonable on the price to.

My 85 CJ sits on an 86 d44 that I bought for $200 from a guy in colorado while I was over there... I looked at a few places and they still sell replacement shafts for it... at least according to their catalog...

If they are hard to find if you do upgrade can I take your old one for parts? lol

Just put the one piece shafts in a amc 20 and you won't have any problems with it. I ran one for years with 35's on it and never had any problem.

sounds like a good idea. Mike, how much would you charge?

If it is a clean used shaft you are looking at $80.00 to cut and spline it. If we need to bead blast the rust off add $10.00.

If you do 2 shafts it is $60.00 per shaft, so there is some savings.

Sounds like a good excuse to go full float on the rear. Well worth it just for the peace of mind!

Killer price for a custom shaft!
