why does google earth work with the coordinates for everyone but me?

when i get to work tomorrow i will use my work pc to check it

Your settings may be on a different coord system. Go to tools; options; 3dview and check which coord system you are on. Kurt's coords are degrees, minutes, seconds. I use UTM's anytime I use a paper map, but most folks will post like Kurt does online so I tend to keep google earth set up that way.

This is good to know, thank you! I wondered about the difference in coord systems but never looked into it.

...my quadrangles are all 1997, so nothing could postdate it by 30 years yet.

And look at the lower data on the map (not always printed) and it will tell you when they actually did a field survey in that area, some will note that they used aerial photographs to compile them in the 40's (which is the most accurate), and some were field checked through the 80's but a field check won't likely result in a trail or obstacle like Waynes World showing up on paper, hence why its nowhere on your map that in fact pre-dates not only Waynes World, but the majority of Rattlesnake and Constrictor all together ;)

But, since your so convinced your map is current as of 1997, do tell why your map doesn't show any of the other routes that were on the ground in 1997 ;)

One must consider the coordinate entry method (UTM, DMS, D.d., etc) as well as the datum, Google Earth uses WGS84, some paper maps are in varying datums (NAD27 for example which many USGS maps are ;)). Mix/match and you will be off.

True. I could go into that further, I could pull out my GIS manuals and get super technical if you like. ;)

Lets save it for a camp fire :D

Fwiw I think the default in GE is always WGS84, in fact I don't even know if one can change it and I don't have my USGS software on this laptop but I'm fairly certain they use NAD27 on the older paper themselves (which are scanned) and the software allows you to specify your import datum.

i'm not "so convinced" i am just reading off of the map itself. photoinspected in 1997, series 1997, boundaries verified in 2002. no clue as to why many trails are not on this map
