It all depends

On what you plan on doing with it. I put in the high output 4.3 Chevy, now I wish I had gone with the V-8 ( Just for the sound ) Crazy I know. I am running 42" tires and dana 60's. Is it going to stay street legal, trail only what will it be used for?

There is only one 3.0 V6, it's the one that sucks.

Some people really like the 3.0 and once the head gaskets have been taken care of they can prove to be a good engine, 4Chin on RME has the finest example of a 3.0 I have ever driven. Good power on the freeway and it really lugs on the trail.

The 3.0 is NOT an engine I would swap in. Depending on the year of 4Runner, I would do a 22R-E or a 5VZ-FE 3.4 V6.

My 3.0 had 256000 on the ticker when I disconnected the odo for dual cases. It's still running strong.(I know...I never drive it...yada yada yada). I know they're not the motor of choice, but they do get a bad rap. If you go with a rebuilt 3.0, the head gasket issue will be taken care of. When it goes, it will be for a 4.3 Vortec or Chev V8.

If you want the least expensive route I would get a re-built 3.0 and keep on wheelin'.
They do get a bad rap, have bad access for maintenance but my biggest concern has always been the head gaskets. Get those addressed and slap it in there.
