You have to have a degree, preferably in the field you intend to teach. Then you apply through the Alternate Route to Teaching License. Once they accept you to the program, you can apply to jobs. Once you get a job, you start getting your license which takes about 18-24 months.

Potential teacher: "Tacoma"
Education Official: "you like tellin people stuff"
Potential teacher: "yes, especially things I think I know stuff about"
EO: "yee-ha! Yer hired mister"

So do you have to go to school to get said certificate? I though there was some allowance for college grads to teach their major in high school environments without the need to go through a teaching degree?

You need to have a certificate to teach in a public school but not a private. It is possible to get highered on a provisional which can allow you up to 3 years to get your degree. Those gigs are hard to come by and mostly occur in very rural or inner city (none in utah). Alternate liscensing is the way to go unless you have 3ish semesters to devote to college then you can just geta double major and end up with your certificate and a second bachelor.
