I heard this phrase a lot this weekend... :) . Could someone educate me a little on what exactly "bump it" means.. in rockcrawling terms? I thought it was a loud speaker term :D .

I was doing a less than perfect job climbing the rocks at the Jeep Convention in Ogden this weekend and I would like to be a little better for next time I am in this situation, of course it was my first try at a stack of boulders so cut me some slack. :p :)

The moab bump is a little different from the types of throttle you get elsewhere--err at least thats what I've been told by people who come from elsewhere.

The moab bump is about momentum--you need to carry some momentum into the obsctcle--it's not so much a sudden application of throttle, it's just using the throttle at the right time. I see so many peopel waiting until their tires are against the obstacle to give it gas and then it's too late. You have to give it a little throttle before the obstacle/ledge and then maintain that momentum. Normally, the impact of your tire will bounce it up and over the ledge.

Sometimes, too much throttle will force the tires to slip and you wont' go anywhere. So it's a finesse thing--it's the right amount of throttle at the right times. Start with a little, and move up until you hit it hard enough.

When I bump it on big stuff, I'll give it just enough throttle to get up the part I'm hung up on, but then I'll get off the gas until I feel what it's going to do---I dont like having the skinny one to the wood the entire time. That brakes parts and makes you loose your line.

Word. It's all about timing and finesse. Hit it too soon, you're in for a wild ride. Wait too long, you have no momentum to go over and you'll just spin your tires. Depending on the obstacle, I'll let my back tires get about 12"-18" from said obstacle, then give it a little goosy goosy to get over, then quickly let off so I don't go flying into something else.
