What lights are required?

I need to know exactly what lights I have to have on the front of my Cherokee to be legal, and do they have to be specific colors? Can I get away with just headlights and turn signals on the front? Do I need running lights? Do I need side marker lights?

I'm quite certain that your turn signals have to be viewable from the side, this is the reason that guys fail inspection after they have "flat fendered" their Wranglers. I have never heard of needing any kind of marker light on a passenger vehicle.

So if I have turn signals flush mounted in a dimpled hole in my front bumper, I also need some on the sides? What about running (or I think they're also called 'parking') lights?

Do YJs have turn signals on the sides? I thought they were only in the front grill. Aren't those lights in the fender flares just marker lights?

The manual makes it sound like parking lights and side marker lights are also required, and must be yellow or amber.

I'm pretty sure you have to have amber side AND front markers (or one light visible both ways) as well as flashers visible from the front. And high/low beams.

The reason I think that is because my 4runner originally had the parking lights that wrapped around the corner next to the headlight, and the signals recessed into the front bumper. Now that I've combined them, both the parking and signal lights are visible from the front and the side, and that obviously works too.

Yep, you have to have whatever lights your rig came with stock, and the same color. You could do two sets of off road lights for your high and lows.

Thanks. This is helpful.

Just starting to read through it. It looks like both high and low beams are required. I can't just replace the headlights with some off-road lights...:(

I was going to run some of the Hella H4 off road lights that have driving and fog in one light and wire the fog as the high beam and if I get hassled still for high beam than wire both to come on at the same time when selecting fog.

My bro took out his stock headlights on his ZJ and put in some Hella lamps. To make it pass inspection he modified the Hellas to accept a bulb that had hi/lo beams. Got the look he wanted and it passed inspection. Downside is that those bulbs have a different depth than the standard Hella bulbs did, so the light did not shine like it should have.
