What makes my computer turn off?

Is there a way to find out which programs are re-booting my computer overnight? I save anything important, but sometimes I have a dozen or more internet windows open, things I need to call on, etc... I'll sit down at my computer in the morning and everything is 100% closed. On my laptop a little "your computer has been updated" message pops up, but nothing on my desktop??

laptop sounds like it is the microsoft auto updater. not a bad thing, but I like setting mine so I can atleast choose when it will update. I get the notices, then I take it from there.

The desktop. Who knows. I would first guess a heat issue. Does it ever just turn off for no reason while you are working on it? Often the anti-virus programs are scheduled to scan in the middle of the night. They will ramp your CPU up to 100%, cause some heat, and they will turn off to protect themselves. But if it is a heat problem it will often happen while you are working on it in the middle of the day as well.

Nope, its never happened while I am working on it, in fact its really only happened a couple of times, mabey every 15 days?? I've opened all the obvious programs and none of them seem to have "scheduled tasks". I was hoping there was a log or something like that? Would Firefox do it? I know it keeps prompting me to update it...

windows XP I assume

Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Event viewer

Have a look around in there for any clue or errors that may have happened before it shut down.

some times the anti virus software will update itself depending on your settings and when its done it will reboot for the updates to take effect... same with the ms updates...

Check my computer --> properties --> automatic updates tab

I have mine notify me of updates (Just don't trust MS :spork: to do it automatically for me)

BINGO  It was set to automatically download and install, from the logs Rusted pointed me too it looks like it rebooted at 3am, which is the exact time the automatic updates were set to. So I'm fairly confident that fixed it :D
