Something I recommend. (or believe) in crawling, gears are more important than horsepower. You can turn a large tire with a small motor with the right gears. But don't get me wrong there is no replacement for displacement.

I think the best way to learn about crawling is to buy stock and build as you learn.

But I also know how it it to have too many projects.

I'd say to stay away from anything with IFS (full size bronco's after 79)

My family all has full size crawlers, they go everywhere we need them too, but they are either short beds or broncos.

Cherokees are a great way to go, except the unibody sucks. Toyota 4runners are fun too.

I would do the old school bronco personally.

See there is a bunch of us that think 69 EB for 3 grand is a steal at best, and the right deal at worst, and the way to go...

first 4x4, is well, unique because it is.

first 4x4 that is topless... x2

first 4x4 that is topless, v8 (done correctly cause the factory put it there, even if not that PARTICULAR v8, it was an option), lightly lifted, attractive, bigger than stock tires..... x Infinity!

Imho if you are going to be doing a fair amount of crawling/flexing, never buy a unibody (Comanche/Cherokee) Toyotas have notoriously strong frames/drivetrain even in stock form. Its no fun to build a Comanche and put a lot of money into it, and then have your unibody "frame half" be ripped away from the "body half". And as far as engines go 22re and 4.0 are both great... If lifting a jeep (to the degree that you want to) you must install a slip yoke eliminator.

High school budget, TOYOTA.

we should start a High school budget build thread.

Cheap truck or 4runner, in order of funds(hopefully solid axle front)to save SAS

1-In cab cage
2-weld rearend
3-gearkit or doubler
4-front locker
4.5-lift springs
5-35-37" tires
6-Super Longfields
