I think the internals are a lot larger in an atlas too. I can't confirm this though.

Other differences include cast iron casing (D300) and strong aluminum casing (atlas) which I imagine could cause some weight differences... But I'm not sure that matters for most applications anyways.

Atlas is readily available in both driver and passenger outputs.

That's about all I can think of. I would rather sink money into a solid atlas than piece together a D300 personally.

I have a pic of the atlas gear VS. a D300 gear at home, I will post it when I get home...

The Atlas is more durable than a 300. Not too long ago on a trail who's name cannot be mentioned a certain Dana 300 equipped CJ ended up in front high and rear low (again). Not a pretty sight. By the time you buy a dana 300 (In questionable condition because it's 20-30 years old), pssibly rebuild it, flip it, clock it, upgrade both output shafts (the front is still not readily available), regear it, and twin stick it, you could have bought a brand new Atlas built exactly how you want it. Oh, and your 300 is still not as strong! The Atlas is the king of transfer cases.

My thoughts exactly. Twin stick being one of the determining factors IMHO.........I almost think you'd spend MORE on the D300 unless you already have one kicking around............Do I know the D300 equipped CJ? The one that 'flops' on command? Was there an XJ that 'bailed' on that trail due to brake line issues?

Yes to all questions. ;)

I think you can equate it this way, from a size stand point :)

dana 300= small block chevy

atlas= big block chevy

:D

You know, if you think about it, that's a great analogy. Small block can make just as much power as a big block, but at the cost of reliablility and cost of parts. Big blocks can handle about anything you want, but you've got a higher entry cost, but greater reliability.

here is the pic...as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words:D

I would have gone atlas if I had the money, double was way cheaper...but I'm not too disappointed(besdes the weight:eek: )of the doubler setup...

The Atlas is a better and stronger case than a 300 but how many people are putting their money into the T/C when what they really should be upgrading is their transmission? I have seen several Atlas cases used behind AX5s or 15s to me it makes no sense.

Also for me, the way I like to use my Jeep I do not think I want a 4 to 1 T/C With granny low in the transmission I rarely want a lower gear and I think I would be missing the range that works best for sand and other high wheelspeed situations. I see 4 to 1 people shifting their case for the faster sections of trails and back when the going gets slower and I think my 2.6 case is just fine. The 3 to 1 Atlas could be made to work nicely though I bet.

I'm running a ORD Gen II 203/205 doubler.. really happy with it, besides lifting that heavy motha in out :p ...

Shawn I didn't know they made 35 spline outputs for the 300? or was that finger stumbling on the key board?

I have an Atlas also its a 3.8 with 32spl front and rear outputs. Oh yeah, I wouldn't give it up for your sweet d300 with all the sweet stuff and $500. Because that Tera gear set will eventually break! J/K But it's sheer size of all internals is what makes it the one for me!

i run only the best... :-\
np231 with teralow, short shaft and a new chain (chains suck!)
what makes atlas better than a d300: the fact it says atlas on it is good enough for me!
i wish i had an atlas, it would have only been twice the price of my current setup and it is worth it for the peace of mind alone, imo.

This is what I am talking about (no offense).

I will buy that the atlas case and the gears may be stronger, they may be much stronger. I think the BB vs SB example is a good one. My question is do you need a BB? I guess when I start stripping the teeth on my D300 gears or exploding the case, I'll eat my words.

BTW
203/D300 5.3:1 32 spline front and rear, clockable, completly rebuilt for under a grand....even if you add the $20 flip from PBB, I have yet to see a an Atlas for $1020.00

PS I also think the toy cases are a great option.
