So a few minutes ago I got a call from the guy that was contracted to transport my jeep to me. I had paid a broker, Highline Transport, to have it shipped and he contracted it out to this Robert guy. I talked to him for about 30 minutes when he dropped my jeep off (about a month ago exactly) and he was a pretty nice and down to earth guy.....

so the phone call. He told me that Highline paid him $800 to ship it, and they keep the rest of the money (1100 total I paid, so the broker got 300). The check that Highline cut to him came back insufficient funds. so the driver is getting stiffed and Highline won't return calls or answer their phone. the bank tells him (robert) that it'll be quite a while before the account will have enough money to draw from.

So anyway, what would you do? tried calling Highline but they say they are on holiday vacation right now.

Dispute the charge on my card and pay Robert directly?

Tell Robert there is nothing that I can do and it's not my business?

I'd rather have the guy that paid the fuel and did the work to get my jeep to me have the money, but I don't want to dispute the charge, pay Robert, and then have Highline comeback and say I owe them 1100 for services rendered.

You already paid for the service. I wouldn't pay again. His paycheck is between him and his employer.

I would let it be... as crappy as it is. Your not responsible for making sure sub-contractors get paid by those they contract with IMO.

Seems the auto transport business is completely shady... another RME member recently lost $1200 in a similar deal. He paid the transporter, he kept delaying & delaying... Ben called to canel and the guy refuse to refund his money, nor would he still deliver as he had cancelled. He contacted authorities, etc but there is little recourse with no written contract, etc.

Thats kind of what i was thinking, but I was wondering if I could authorize payment of only 300 to highline and then the 800 to the driver so he got paid. everyone gets their money, everyone is happy. I'm sure highline wouldn't think that is an awesome solution.

Yep, I agree with what has been said. You held your end of the deal & paid your part. Sucks for Robert, but that's the business that he's in & he has to cover his ass, not you.

I tried to get a transport company to haul my old Dodge from NH when I bought it. I called them, got a quote, etc. After deciding to go with them, paying a $150 down payment & agreeing to the contract I had all kinds of problems. They later told me they didn't travel on I-70, :mad2: . I ended up canceling, loosing my down payment and having to ofly out & drive back. Vehicle transporting is a very shady business.

As much as it sucks for Robert to be out the $800, I'd agree with everyone else's comments. I would, however, be doing anything else I could within my power to help him get his money. After all it's not your problem, but they guy did you a great service and was nice and courteous to boot. Although you are in no way obligated to do it, but I would.

Your legal responsibility is to Highline. You got your service, so if you tried to cancel the charges (which VISA wouldn't do) your tit would be in a ringer.

What you can do for him is give him an affidavit saying that Highline contracted him to haul your junk, that you paid Highline and that your junk was delivered safely and on time. Then, make sure to spread the word about Highline on EVERY forum you can.

Have the

guy take it too Judge Judy or something(they pay you to go on their). But you didn't have a contract with them. If you dispute the charges you are committing fraud. Plus what Bank tells third parties that they won't have funds for awhile? Seems weird to me (working at a Credit Union). But paid your buck this person has got to go fight his own battles you could be a witness?

These are the only ones I found that are legal.

HIGHLINE TRANSPORT INC FT LAUDERDALE, FL
HIGHLINE TRANSPORTATION ALPHARETTA, GA

For others it usually good if your going to have a company haul your junk for you to make sure there legal. Go to www.Safersys.org type in company name. You can see what CVSA inspections they've had, and a bunch of other cool stuff. Also find there phone #'s, and what they mainly haul, how many trucks they have in there fleet.

As a business owner that works as a sub contractor, it is my problem to go find the money owed to us. You're just the innocent bystander. The best thing I would say is to supply Robert with something in writing stating what you paid for specifically and offer to supply an affidavit if it comes to that.

Has the money been taken out of your account yet? if not you could arrange with robert so that he is at highlines bank the same day your money goes in... if he presents the check and there is money in account they have to pay the check unless highline is in bankruptcy then its a whole new game...

What he said, even if you tried to dispute it, it would come back to you plus any fees incurred because of the dispute. You paid Highline for a service and they delivered on that service, at this point your part is over. :-\

Your Deal was with Highline, and they performed a service for you, they may have screwed over Robert, or Robert may have got fired and hes pulling a scam on you. trying to get double payed.. If you try and help him out you may be the one to get had.

I would supply Robert with a Affadavit if he asks, but outside of that he can handle it himself, bouncing a check is a criminal act.. and he can collect or someone can go to jail..he has more recoarse than you.
