Whats up with this 4.0 ?

I am trying to fix a friends 99 Grand Cherokee that they toasted the motor in. The original motor was run out of water after a bad head gasket leak. I took the head off and found water in all but one cylinder. One cylinder had obviously been sucking water for a while since it was steam cleaned and had a shiny piston with no carbon on it. That cylinder also is showing scuffing on the cylinder wall so I think the piston is starting to go. The engine has also had water in the oil but I don't know for how long.
After finding all this I found a low mileage 4.0 from a 2001 XJ to swap into it. Last night as I was pulling things apart to do the swap when I realized that I had a problem. The 99 4.0 in this Grand Cherokee has different motor mount bolt pattern on the block  and the 2001 motor won't bolt up  . I have looked at every 4.0 that I own which includes an 87,89,92,96,99(TJ), and this 2001 and they are all the same but this 99 Grand 4.0 is different. Why would they make a 99 Grand motor different than a 99 TJ motor ?
What years of Grand Cherokee motors will fit this thing ?????

Dave,

I was under the understanding that would bolt up also. The only idea that comes to mind is the Grand is set up for V8's on the frame. Maybe that would be the reason for the bolt pattern? A wrecking yard might have the answer on the difference.

maybe it had something to do with the grands using a different automatic (32re or somethig like that) than the XJs.

there are differences in the blocks for the motor mounts and the accessory mounting bosses.
I learened this the hard way helping a friend with an engine replacement.
There was a significant amount of profanity involved.

Yeah I was mumbling quite a bit too. At least I have another Jeep that can use the motor I bought.
