when my jeep was towed.......

they hooked it up like this. is this how its supposed to be done? hook on the shackle and the jeep winched forward( winch line wrapped around front axle) to secure it, causing the leaves to gain some negative arch? and if you look closely there's a chain wrapped around the lower control arm. was this the right way to secure my jeep to the tow truck? common sense to me says no and that the trailer hitch in the rear would of been the better option for the back and on the tow hook mounts i had in the front.

I'd much rather have the tow truck driver hook mine the way he did it than on the hitch or on tow hooks.

I don't even trust getting a stuck vehicle out with d-rings in a hitch or on a bumper. And yeah whenever we tie down a rig for vacation we always cross our straps around the axle housing because like Chevy crew said when you hit a bump the straps don't get slack.

Hooking a tie down on the suspension creates constant resistance if pulled down tight enough. Hooking it on the axles creates equal pull front and rear with no movement to the frame structure, but movement within the body. Is one better than the other? If done correctly, nope.

IMO.

Im the same way, 2 on the back crossed to the axle, 2 on the front crossed to the axle. My rig is very soft sprung, and I have never had an issue allowing the suspension to do it job while riding on the trailer.

IMO... the only way to suck down the suspension enough to keep it from bouncing is all the way to the bumpstops.

you know one of the 4 wheeler mags did an article on how to properly tie down your rig on a trailer... if I remember right you should be using 4 straps two in back and two in front... both forming an x across the rig... this keeps the rig centered on the trailer and you should pull it down so that the suspension give some good resistance to the tiedowns. this keeps them tight and not coming unhooked when you hit a bump.

Yep I think I have that issue, petersons off-road if I remember right. Also extreme 4x4 on powerblock tv on spike did the same lesson.

One around each axle is fine, the way the TT driver did it is fine too. I prefer to just throw one around the axles and call it good. Tying straight down on the body can cause slack on a bump and cause the straps to come off, the reason that its still ok on your rig is that he is pulling more straight back than down.

The only ones I trust for sure are the ones GM used on the CUCV's. They'd have to tear the frame pretty much right in two-- they're bolted all the way around the frame horns and I don't know what the limit is under tension on a frame rail, but I bet it'll get the truck unstuck. Certain isn't any weaker than the winch mounted to the same frame would be, with the added benefit of having less shear forces transferred to 'em. :D

HOLY SCRARY!!!!!!!

i drive tow truck for a living, it looks like he hooked the front properly, there are slots on the sides of the unibody designed for towing using the Mini J's on the bridal

there are also these slots right infront of the rear tires on a cherokee. i would NEVER throw a J-hook on the shackle, you are just asking to bend parts when you lazy hook a vehicle. J-hooks are designed to be thrown on Axle tubes and nothing else.

What was the tow company who towed your vehicle? feel free to PM me the name if you dont want to post it online

You must really be bored...you dont even OWN this jeep anymore

As far as tow truck towing goes, I think devel knows what he is talking about, as for towing a vehicle to say Moab and back, I would do it off the axle like chevycrew, and crocflip and hardline90 do it. And use triangulation.

as far as towing on a trailer i completly agree with strapping vehicles down by the axles, but as far as a rollback goes i always hook them by the frame. reason being is its drastly effects your center of gravity. if the body is allowed to move freely it makes the tow truck very tipsy. and with the winch sucking down its not going to loosen up like straps on a trailer
