Where can I still go shooting?

I have a group of people that want to go shooting the Saturday after Thanksgiving but the area I use to go across the lake was closed during the summer. Is it back open yet? Does anyone have any other places that are open to the public. I am looking for a place that is based around the utah county area. Thanks in advance.

Payson land fill, there is state land out behind with signs telling you no explosive targets and pick up your trash.

Good luck.

How far are you wanting to shoot, just handguns or longer distance with rifles? We were out by Grantsville before hunting season and we were able to pick out some targets between 900 and 1200 yards on the mountainside.

Thanks for the responses. Going to go to the Payson landfield one. Little moab would be fun with a jeep trip also but too far for just some morning shooting. Too bad about pelican point. Two years is long time for a temporary closure. We will be lucky to get it back.

I think its still in the process of being sorted out there is a web site on the subject. Some say its not legal to close public land in Utah to shooting. One of the posts said the public land west of the power lines is open to shooting. But as far as I can tell you are at little moab by the time you find public land on the west side of the power lines. Please note other wise if you know a good spot a little closer. I get a little sad when I see the huge amount of trash that has been dumped out there if anyone is interested in organizeing a clean up day I will come and help. I haul off trash every time we go out but the problem is huge. The way things look like a landfill out there ill be surprised if we ever get it back. Sad. Mombo.

Its the same everywhere I have seen. If there is one group with a bigger PR problem than 4x4 and ATV drivers, it is the shooting community. I try to spend some time cleaning up my favorite shooting spot every time we go out, but honestly, there are a bunch of shooters out there who just don't seem to give a damn about how things look. I hate to say it, but if I owned any of the land around any of these public shooting places, I would be doing everything I could to get it shut down.

It really is sad. I live fairly close to an area where a lot of people shoot, and have been surprised at the amount of crap I see out there all the time. I have considered soliciting to one of the local gun stores to see if they would sponsor a dumpster for a couple weeks. I bring back as much as I can every time we go out, but only so much fits in my little can at home :-\

I use to spend some time on Bogley.com until I called out some guys who hauled an old camp trailer into the desert and filled it with tannerite. It was an impressive explosion but who will ever clean that crap up? They banned me from the site. funny thing was about a year later they sent me an apology. I am an avid hunter and I do some recreational shooting but it is getting very embarrassing to be lumped with these slobs.
