We have 2 mounted in schoons. 1 on the center hump on the floor and one on the cage behind the pass seat. I would say whatever is easily accessible and out of harms way...

I have one like this... Available from Poly Performance. I'd get you a link, but PPs site is blocked from work...?

Mine are both like Bryson's. Problem will be getting one before Saturday :( I'm not sure that they require them in the lucas race though.

JC at midnight says he wants to start making them

The biggest thing I have to add is please make sure it's accessible when your rig is upside down. Seems basic but it's something a lot of people miss.

Oh and carry more than the bare minimum, both bigger bottles and more of them. Those cute little chrome bottles that barely meet the rules are hopefully enough to keep you alive while you escape the car, but are practically worthless if you want to try to save the car from a decent fire. Fire extinguishers are CHEAP compared to losing your car.

A 100% agree with Red.

Plan for the worst, practice drills on handling it.

Haha, I was looking for that picture. IIRC we shot 8 fire extinguishers at it and it still burned down.

It also brings up another good bit of info: make sure they're mounted away from each other, because when they are both sitting on top of the fuel tank, and the fuel tank is what's burning, you're effed in the a.

My ideal setup would be:

1x 10# Fire Bottle plumbed with one nozzle in the passengers compartment, and one on the fuel cell, with the handle in the center of the dash where both driver and co-driver can easily reach it.

1x 5# on the front of the car accessible in both upside down and wheels down positions.

1x 5# at the back of the car typically only accessible from the right side up position.

and if there is room for it, 1x 5# in the passengers compartment.

Typical rulebooks will require a minimum of 2x 5# bottles. After firing about dozen different extinguishers at various fires in the last few years, I've decided that I'm gonna carry more than the minimum. They run out much too quickly, muuuuch too quickly.

Not vehicle related, but a few years ago our neighbors house nearly burned down. We emptied our 2 fire extinguishers trying to fight the fire and when they were empty, it was the most fawked, sickening feeling I've ever had. We did have a hose nearby and moved to that next to put the fire out. The following day, I went out and bought 4 extinguishers to have around the house, with the 2 big ones going into the garage. Having several big extinguishers is VERY wise advice.

The Canguro Racing 5 Unlimited desert car runs this style of extinguisher mount. The clamps broke during our last race, but suprisingly the mount and extinguisher stayed with the car. I happened to notice it during a pit somewhere around 100-150 miles into the race.
