Where to start

My D60 that came off my 91 dodge does. I was told this was a great axel and that's why I took it when I sold the truck. It has kingpins and was from a diesel, I was told this was the desirable axel to have.

Kingpin Dana 60's are nearly as good as it gets however Look near on the bottom of the front differential cover. In the cast part of the axle (the axle itself not the cover) there will be 1 of 2 numbers. If it says 60 your good if it says 61 you will need to do some research. Did the 91 diesel have an intercooler, 4speed auto or a 5speed manual? If it had a 3 speed automatic (TF-727) you could very well have a dana 61. Those are equally as strong but they came with a 3.07 gear ratio which is very undesirable in the offroad scene :-\ Rear axle will match whatever ratio the front has..

It did have a intercooler, it was an automatic 3 speed and very well could have the 3.07 gearing. To back up a grade when hauling hay or hooked up to my 32ft fifthwheel, I had to put it in 4low. It would pull like crazy, but we tweaked the motor a bit, but it would fly in overdrive. That is why I figured, even without knowing the gear ratio I was going to regear both axles before putting it on this truck.
