Which 40 is good these days?

@mesha are you still in a love affair with trepadors? I seem to remember those being in high praise a few years back.

It seems like there is positive feedback for nearly all the available tires out there. Perhaps I’ll just have to make the choice based off of something like cost or weight.
I love the way treps work. I don't love that they seem to feather on me. I would run them on an off road rig, but no longer run them on a daily driver.

Good info, thanks for giving me your opinion. I had hoped to hear you were still loving them, though.

Well after lots of thought, phone calls, and failed purchases I haven’t gotten any closer to getting new tires.

I decided to go with the Yokohama Geolanders due to being D rated and only 87lbs. Unfortunately after purchasing a set at big-o , I got the regretful phone call that they weren’t actually In stock and no estimated date to get them. I called discount tire next since their website says they are in stock. I asked the guy to call his warehouse and have them physically verify their existence. Unfortunately they weren’t actually there, and no others in the system. The guy called Yokohama for an ETA and they told him they were no longer going to be produced!

My next choice was Cooper STT Pro and only a little heavier at 90lbs. I had discount tire, and big-o both tell me they cannot get them due to a National backorder!

Discount tire told me the only 40” R17 that they could get was a Patagonia. I’m still waiting to hear back from a couple other suppliers.

Apparently most manufacturers are only producing stock size tires right now due to material shortages, and high freight prices.

I worry that even if I do find a set of tires, if I damaged one I may never be able to get a replacement 😬

Your experience lines up with my experience. I just wanted a single 39 BFG for a spare. Like you, I'd hate to kill a tire right now

This is probably the only time I’d consider a Patagonia- if it’s the only tire you can get…

I've got the 37" Patagonias and they're fine. I killed one in December and took until March to get a new one. I thought about stepping up to 39's but I decided to wait until I wear out my 37's and the shortages are solved.

I’ve been looking for some 40’s as well, since I can’t find a replacement KM3.
I’ve narrowed it down to Procomps or MT Baja Boss— both available from a few vendors.
I don’t think I’d ever get desperate enough to run Chinese tires….

What is the problem with Patagonias?
I think people don’t care for the look? Or maybe they are the Chinese tires @jeepin4x4james is talking about? I have the 285/70/17 muds on my van. 20k miles in they are wearing fantastic for a mud tire. I don’t do heavy off-roading but they have performed well in snow, soft beach sand and the Utah desert. I personally will buy another set when these are done. I think they are a fantastic value when price is considered.

What if you bought an extra tire now just to keep in the garage for insurance?
That’s definitely a consideration although prices are sky high since supply is low.
I believe 40” procomps are available, I can get you hooked up if you want to go that route.
Procomps don’t really get me excited. I appreciate the offer, and I’ll let you know if I change my mind.
Hey James. I think I saw a set of 40 MT Baja Boss's at Just4Fun last week. You could try and give Curtis a call.
I’ll give them a call too. Maybe they have more than 1 set

That’s good input, thanks. Your right, I do t love the look. Also it seems that peoples opinions are extreme on both ends of the sprectrum with them. I’ve also been told they don’t last under a heavy rig.
I've got a 40"x17 BFG KRTB you can have for a spare. My neighbor moved and left it in my meadow...
Cool🤘

I just recently bought a set of Toyo M/T's and ill say that im impressed. They are technically a radial but the sidewalls are super thick and the tread very soft. They connect great at 5 psi and feel great. To be honest they get way more traction than Patagonia's.

Also, alot of issues you guys are seeing from tire suppliers i think are their country of origin. Pats are taiwan and alot of other big tires are chinese. toyos are japanese and i had no issues with an non-popular size.

Where did you pick them up? Are they 40s? I’ve been told by a few places that those aren’t in stock either.

I don’t mind the Toyos, I just wanted to try something new. They are also super heavy at 104 pounds. That’s 17 pounds heavier than the Geolanders that look very similar.

Im running a 38x15 due to the 16" TR beadlocks im running so im stuck with weird sizes.

But jegs has the 40x13.50r17 for $553 a piece
