Which classes would you like to see at future Quarterly Training Days?

all in all 2012 seemed to be an awesome year for the RME training day. I really like MMP for what it has to offer, but I’m also hoping to actually get out onto a trail to enjoy just meeting as a group, hanging out without much pressure to put on (or attend) an extended class. I would like to attend and have a bit more down time to enjoy the group thing and practicing what we learned. I like having extra time to meet new people and enjoying already known topics and possibly elaborating on them as a group (makes us all teachers to pass on info).

demo: How to change a tire on and off a rim/with of course seating the bead after. (air compressors/CO2/ether)

Hands on: Advanced spotting/technical driving (this would possibly give the option for advanced vehicle recovery)

Hands on: Everyone bring/cook a favorite camping entree, camp cleanup how to's, camp gadgets (endless knowledge transfer here).

Class/Demo: Competition rock crawling rules and regulations, judging.

Class: I would like to learn way more about the intricacies of trail issues in UT and real up to date actions that can be acted upon within the community.

Hands on: maybe do a geocaching event on a trail with teams.

great ideas Ryan. The issue we've run into with having an "event" at a location other than MMP is the hassle of permits (6 month notice, and $100) and insurance. I've looked into several different locations, and I'm in touch with the BLM to see if we can partner with them without insurance and permits. MMP is awesome to work with, and a great place to hone rock crawling skills, but I agree that variety is the spice of life.

The first noob run was so big that it could have technically been called an "event" and I probably should have had insurance and permits, even though it was public land. That was before I knew what I now know. But rest assured, we're trying to branch out. The Forest Service Land (AF Canyon) doesn't require permits or insurance, which is why we chose Graveyard Flats for our last training day.

Private land is another great option, so if someone knows of a great private location, let me know.

Keep 'em coming everyone.

I could be a long drive but with the amount of information to be decimated it would be worth it. could we use area BFE?

Olaf is always easy to deal with. Aside from distance, that could work out well. Maybe we could partner with some of our vendors and do a 2-day thing where each RME vendor teaches a different skill...

Lots of great ideas in this thread!

are bfe is enough of a drive that i would need time off work, as opposed to driving 30 minutes to tooele. that may be a deal breaker for some people

Sounds like the investigative work is well on its way (thanks), keep us in the loop on options for diff Offroad venues.

One of my favorite wheeling trips was "duel at dutchman flats" put on my Kurt I believe. different challenges with 2-rig teams. It was a blast! Maybe we could do a short training day and then different challenges (mostly timed) to use the different skills that we've talked about...recovery, pulling somebody up a hill with a strap, tire change, gps to find a hidden item, winching, etc. Just a thought....

Wow, flashback... that was a long time ago. Chris "EZ" Perri was the main man with that, myself and a couple others (Larry Olsen, Brett Davis, Russ Fullmer, ???) helped with the planning and execution. Larry and I ran the 'stretcher carry' segment up at Forest Lake. I haven't thought about that for ages. Chris did that to test the waters for the Utah Trophy Challenge event he had discussed hosting, basically a mini Camel Trophy here in Utah. Chris, Brett Davis and a few other locals competed in the Team Trophy Challenge event in Washington State and Chris wanted to do something similar in Utah. We hashed out some planning and as I recall Chris wanted to do the trial run as a U4WDA Fall Event, 2003 or 2004? That was a bunch of fun. I may have a list of the challenges we did in my boxes of U4 archive stuff.

Bust out that list! That event was amazing! That was shortly after I got off my mish and started wheeling (prob. fall 2005).

Right on, will do. Come to think of it I'm sure there is a U4 Compass article on it too. Fall of '05 sounds right, I'll start there with a Compass article.

Oh man!!! You need to check out these books by Charles Wells, you will be hooked on navigating with his writeups and a few simple GPS coords/descriptive landmarks.

Just think, you can plan a trail ride without requiring a trail guide/leader to be present.

more persuasive people than you have tried to recruit me into geocaching. it's just not my thing.

Trying to ponder a few more to keep this going:

Mobile Camping Styles (Tents, trailers, pop up's, RTT, Slide In's, Hybrid Toy haulers), I would love to listen to trial and error feedback & possibly try them all out if members had them on site.

Advanced Tech discussion on Jeep full width swap or Toy 1 IFS/fullwidth swap. Possibly details on SOA swaps, Outboards, Traction Bars, Cheap Tricks. (bet you could get a specific user to present each one)

Maybe a Vehicle Highlight, a demo of a really cool RME rig the detailed discussion of how it came to be (steve we could use u for this... a diff rig each trainig day...lol just kidding man)
-Why does the vehicle ramp so good
-Why is there a dual case
-Why is there a selectable locker
-Why I air down
-Why I have JKS disconnects
....and so on with a live demo in the field

Active Trip report presentation, I like reliving 1st hand details/pic/vids for a specific trip that had a lot to offer (freeze you tail off, EJS, KOH, Relic Run, WOTR....)

Dont forget the teardrop's . :)
I woudnt mind a Cooking class that teaches how to cook fast meals that dont require mass clean-up. Pre-preped type of stuff .

Id like to add to Jinxspot's Vehicle highlights idea. If we could have 3-5 vehicles lined up ranging from
Stock/weekend warrior (30" tires)
Mild rockcrawling/Expedition type vehicle (31-33" tire)
Full on rockcrawlers (tuber and OE-bodided) 35"+
Baja truck or other (fast)
and have the owners do a short 5min story on the Mods, Trails or obstacles its conquered and a quick vid or pics to show off.
This might have to work in conjunction with the history of 4x4's presentation.
Pretty much showing newcomers ya can have fun with all sizes of tires and different sized budgets as well. Also
something to show the different ways newcomers can go with a 4x4

lighter fluid and a match... it always worked at the dunes!!

Starting fluid and a match over here.

I've been using my truck tires to break beads on rims for years now, thanks to your brothers neighbor in Nevada.
