which end to lock?

yeah and that way instead of only having to spend the money on the locker you can spend money on wheel spacers, a whole mess of brackets, re-gearing your front end to match... and a locker

i guess 8.8 swaps have never made sense to me :-\

I just did mine in a xj and it cost me like $350 but ...I lucked out cause I have 4:10's and I have enough offset that I didn't need wheel spacer's. OrvisKrawler did the 8.8 swap in his grand and I don't remember him telling me it was a PITA... PLUS black_zj 44A to start with

Yeah but the $350 is without a locker...
It would be more in a grand cause of the coil buckets and control arm brackets for starters and yeah width problems plague people with that swap unless they have serious offset like you said or spend the coin on wheelspacers.
It's a strong axle but he'd be swapping from a c-clip axle to another c-clip which I've never understood. Anyways, this argument has been hashed out over and over- the 8.8 is an option but it's not for everyone

Good point's! xj_nate...I agree with you, in my case that swap was a prime upgrade over a D35 plus now I have disk breaks in the rear.

everything is a prime upgrade over a d35 :D

to the OP: how much do you drive it? you could always weld or minispool the rear and lock the front just like goat said and not bother with which is better to lock :greg:

Go to the j/y and get a ford 8.8 from a 95-01 with disk break's then I would lock the rear..... With whatever locker you feel like.

A trussed 44a is as strong if not stronger than an 8.8, and axle shaft upgrades are very pricey for the 8.8. Rear disc BRAKES come stock on every ZJ since about halfway through the 1994 model year.

Actually, I started with the d35 and swapped a 44a last year, the 44a only came in the 96-98 V8 models

Brakes stop your vehicle, an axle breaks when said vehicle puts too much strain on it.

I don't really drive it on the street much these days, but I would rather lock it the right way.

You know what makes the d44a better than the 8.8?
It's already in his jeep

I sure did say that and at the time we didn't know he swapped it, did we? The only thing worse than swapping a c-clip for another is doing that twice, Tom :D

I say truss and cover the d44a and rock it until (if ever) it breaks. I'm not hating on the 8.8- I already said I'm not a fan but yeah... Wheeling is more fun than swapping axles out, especially when it might not even be necessary

I would vote for a rear locker if you have to choose one. Plenty of Grand Cherokee nerds run a locked 44a with limited problems. Lock the rear and buy some spare parts to carry along. You are not turning huge tires and as long as you don't rail on it you probably won't break a rear shaft. I am trying to remember how many 44a's were being repaired in the parking lots of Moab last year at Grand Slam West 2 at least lol.

daily driver?
if not spool rear 44 and electric locker front.
but i would put 44 in front first.
build it like a rubicon 44.
44 center section, 30 outer c and end shafts.
then electric locker,
worked grteat for my broke son.

my vote is for a rear locker as well, if its in the front I would think you would be more likely to break shafts, picture this, with only a front locker if your climbing something and you have a front tire in the air and rear tire stuffed the other rear tire will more than likely be no good to you probably will just be spinning with no locker, with only a front locker that one front tire will be trying to pull the load of the vehicle up whatever your on, if its slickrock you would be putting a huge amount of stress on those shafts hooked to that one front tire that is pulling, the rear would more than likely be able to handle the stress carrying the load of the rig because there are no u joints to break and the shafts are bigger than the fronts

I picked up the 44a for $70 hub to hub and it's a bolt in affair. 8.8 brackets and welding would run close to $400. I got 9 years out of my original 35c and never broke an axle, if that gives you an idea of how I drive. So I'm not too worried about the 44a.

I called Aussie on Monday and will likely be ordering their rear locker next month.

I ran the D35/D30 combo for quite a while in my XJ. D35 had the factory tracklock and I added an ARB to the D30. Worked pretty well for me. I was surprised where the front locker would take me.
