who else is running a swamp cooler?

So our house came with a roof mounted downdraft swamp cooler instead of central air, after a bit of research and replacing the cooling/filter panels it cools our house quite nicely. At the moment the thermostat reads 78 degrees, when we got up this morning it read 72 before I replaced the panels today that were nasty to say the least. There have been some nights it will cool down to 68 or so. The best thing about it is the small increase we see on our utility bill. Not to mention the little bit of humidity feels great and we breathe much better, plus the dogs shed a bit less it seems.

My question is though, when we get ready to build our house in the Morgan area should we install an updated and more efficient evap cooler or central air? It cools off much better out there at night than here in the valley, so I would think either would not be used very much.

Swamp, for me, I have one in the house and garage (yeah, I'm spoiled). 72 in the garage and house at the moment. Did you install aspen pads? Everything else is garbage.

I did install the Aspen pads, did about 2 hours of research yesterday on the different pads and types of coolers. Even in AZ folks use them year round except the monsoon season where they use A/C for a few weeks. Our garage is usually the coolest spot in the house, but when we build I will have one on the shop for sure.

We just hit 100 here and it's still only 78 in the house, I'm sitting here wearing jeans.

I work a lot with Champion coolers and Mastercool. They claim big saving in energy costs but I personally can't do the humity that the coolers put out. But I am getting a new port-a-cool unit that is proto type that I'm going to use in the garage. I can give you Linda from champion coolers number and you can talk and see what will work best for you.

I noticed aspen pads wet out better. Those stupid blue sponge material pads weren't even saturating, just letting water channel down in a few spots.

I had a swamp cooler on this house when I moved in... it worked great and my power bill was very little... then the landlord decided to upgrade to central air... he had his cousin install the least expensive unit he had... little to say its 83 degrees in my house and the power bill is spiking thru the roof!!!

Is a swamp cooler even an option on a newer home? Also, how do they cool a multi story home? Duct work to the lower levels?

Central air for me. The wife and I both run warm so we have it as low as 60 for summer nights and our power bill is like $85/month on the equal pay program. Worth every penny, especially when you consider how cheap our gas bill is during the winter since we let it get as cold as 58 overnight and no warmer than 64.

I hate swamp coolers, always have. We didn't make it three months after buying this house before we had AC put in. We already had the central air system in the house so all it was, was installing the AC unit and having it all plumbed in. I'll never go back to a swamp cooler because I love my house at 70 degrees all the time and I don't care what my electric bill is.

Just moved into a new house. We had ac in the last. Swamps in this one. We are dying right now. I am hoping some pump/pad upgrades may help out. We have a roof mount, and a window mount.

I like the way swamp cooler make it feel but they don't cool nearly enough for me. If my house hits 78 I'm dying of heat.

Something worth mentioning, get a nice thermostat, it'll pay for itself in no time. I had a pretty nice one that would auto switch between heat and ac based on the temp thresholds I set. A couple months ago, I bought a Nest. I paid $250 for but in only four months, I've already cut my bill down by that much year over year. I've saved anywhere from 18-55% every month (year over year). If anyone wants my old one, I'd be happy to give it to you (I paid $80 for it a couple years ago).

83? I would be freezing, my house is currently 99 degrees inside. has hit as high at 102. no complaints here from me anyways
How could you possibly do that?! 65 at night for us with the ac. Never higher than 70 while we're home during the day. Our power bill has never been over $75 for the month.

My in laws have a swamp cooler in their house and I spend as little time over there as possible because of it. Way too hot in the summer.

Yes, and yes. You can plumb in a swamp cooler just like an A/C system, the nice thing about it is you can install a brand new whole house swamp cooler for less than just the cost of a few replacement parts on a central air A/C unit.

I want to trade power bills with you guys. I have central air that cools the house to around 74 when it's in the upper 90's. my power bill is at least $275 a month all summer.

How much is a swamp cooler? I build 2500 sq ft homes and it costs me around $6500 to have all duct run, 90% efficient furnace and ac unit installed. Not to mention all the gas lines in the home, fart fans, and duct for those. I can't imagine saving that much. Especially with the stains you'll get on the roof, the leaks that will eventually occur, and an eyesore on top of a brand new house. These are just my opinions though.

Im in the same boat. My house actually has two separate units one for upstairs and one for the main level and my power bill ranges from $200-$300 during the summer.
