Why is IFS such a bad option?

I know that when we go sleddin', if you take out the sway bar it lays down much easier, how come this isn't the case in off-roadin? You can get good on road and off road performance that way. Is this just unrealistic or what?

It helps a lot off road but on the road it is scary unless you have some really stiff coil overs to keep the roll down.

well now that just totally depends on the truck. I yanked the swaybars off my former XJ, with practically no ill effect. No more quick lane changes at 85 is about it.

IFS sucks off road because there's no leverage effect as in a straight axle to help keep you off the rocks. Also, all the joints kind of suck too. And they're a pain in the ass to lift, etc etc etc.

I hate IFS in trucks. Jeep screwed up bad switching to IFS. Chrysler is ruining them! hehehheh

IFS is bad in the rocks, no matter how many times people try it, it just doesn't seem to work. Your tire moves up, but leaves your diff down low to smack rocks. Factory type IFS also has short arms, so travel is seriously limited when compared to solid axle.

The old Walker Evans rig was interesting to watch with its IFS. I figured if any IFS system would work that one would. But after a season (maybe less) he went to solid axle as well. Goes to show that even with extreame technology and some cash to put behind it IFS is not for 4x4. On the other hand the IFS on my Chevy tow rig was nice, drove like a car, I just knew that it would not be worth a lift, and would never be a good off road vehicle. IFS has its place....the pavement.

walker tore that crap off after one, maybe two, events. the word was that he was still gonna try and develop it but for now its not gonna be on his rig. I think the biggest downsides to idependent suspensions is their strength (or lack of) and the complexity of them...

Thanks for the input, I was just curious....and very very very bored. I get to play on the internet all day at work, so I pretty much just hang out here or surf elsewhere.

Go wheeling with an ifs rig and you'll know how much they suck, no matter what you do to them.. except for desert racing.
