I'm looking for info about winch covers. Are they worth it or are they just a waste of time and money. Or should they be waterproofed??????????

I guess it would depend on which winch you have, and how element proof it is to start with. I just had to go through my Ramsey due to water damage. I'd love to give you some bull story bout how I drove it through a lake, but the facts are it got trashed while my rig was sitting on the trailer for a year.

I wont cover mine, because it's just a hassle I guess. Bad part is Ramsey (I'm not sure about Warn or others), wont sell small items like motor bearings or brushes, but they'll gladly sell you a new motor for about have of what that winch cost you. I think this is how they sell so many covers.

Good news is, as much as they like you to believe otherwise, it's just a freakin starter motor thats cranking your winch. Went to Generator Exchange, and they matched up all the motor parts for something like $12.

I would think its easier to cover it than to rebuild. Covers are not 100% though because moisture will still build up under the cover.

I have a Ramsey REP12000 and its been on my expedition for going on 7 yrs now and has never been covered and I have had no problem with it at all... I use to live in Wyoming and it got allot of winter abuse... all I ever did was spray some chain oil on the cable so that it didn't rust.

The winch was on the front of a AT&T truck for 5 yrs prior to me getting it... so I know it got used then too and was never covered.

So there is my .02....

A ramsey which cover is cheap and taken no time to install/remove I dont know how much mine keeps the water out but I tell myself that it's worth it. I bought mine because I didn't want my cable to rust. It does what i bought it for anyhow.

I use a garbage bag around mine, that way I can easily replace it. People laugh at me though:-\
