I've been thinking about getting a winch rope, but I don't know much about them. What advantages/disadvantages, cost, length, strength, durability, where to buy, ease of use. . .

Bad answer... I want to see some online feedback on this as well. I like the rocklogic guys and trust them, but I like to get an education before I talk to any store.

I love my winch rope. I bought if from Rocklogic. I have used it enough times to be able to say i really like it. I used it on upper helldorado over the waterfall and upper proving grounds on that big ole winch point and it is tough. I like how it doesnt have the memory thing like cable that is all twisted and in coils as you unspool it. You dont have to worry about fraying sharp pieces of metal into your fingers as you slide your hand down it. Man i hate that. I think it is pretty tough. Dont know how durable it is in the long run.

Winch rope is awesome. I wouldn't run anything besides the rope in any of my winches. It's just easier to deal with. I saw one come loose on a big pull in Moab and all it did was fall to the ground. Absolutely no recoil. Much safter than steel. I believe it to be much stronger than steel also, that is if it is used properly.

Right now I'm running the same stuff available from Rocklogic, btw.

Was that my Toyota on the upper proving grounds winch point that you saw the cable come undone?

What's a good price for one, how long are they, can they be used with a snatch block.

the best prices I have seen are form Rocklogic...call them and see what they are asking...length, they have standard lengths but I am pretty sure you can get whatever length you wnat as long as it fits on your winch...snatch block, I see no reason they can't be used with a snatch...

We should do a rope test for strenght!!!
See what different rope maunfacturers are actually selling us.
That prove the best
Don't use any rope that has a hook that is not rated more than the rope itself.
Blue diamond is the best quality we have found that actually sells the proper hook and has a drum gripper way less than all the others.

What kind of maitenence is required with a rope? Also how do you know when you should replace it.

We use winch rope at Thiokol to pull booster segments in and out of the autoclave. We use it approx. 6-8 times a week, We have been using the same rope for about 8 months and you can hardly tell we use it. I don't know where we bought it or how much it cost. I do know that the booster segments weight a hell of a lot more than anything we would be using our winches for, and they are very safe.

Just my .02 cents....

Pros to rope:

Light weight
Soft, nice to hands
No problems "squishing" it (as when wraps of cable cross over each other, tends to flatten and ruin wire rope)
Doesn't stretch and store energy in the event of a break
Repairable

Cons to rope:
Gotta be careful if the rope passes over a rock--use the abrasion guard. Under tension, it will "cut" far easier than wire rope.

That being said, I'm really sold on the rope. I was nervous at first, but it's proven itself in my eyes again and again. I'm now frightened whenever someone spools out a wire rope. :)

I'll be the third to admit I'm now scared of wire rope... I'm sold on the rope, and I was super skeptical about it at first. It will break if you allow it to rub against a rock. I'm considering adding a third abrasion gaurd to mine after I cut it today in Cedar. Even if I had to buy a new rope now, it has lasted many times longer than wire rope would have, and the cool thing is, I DON'T have to replace it! I'm just gonna splice it back together, and make it STRONGER at the point that it broke!

Seems like it was at Cedar City that your rope broke on my obstacle. You were hooked to my rig, and pulling yourself out of a high center situation. I was totally amazed at how the rope simply dropped to the ground. Had that been wire, I fear I would have body damage to my rig. There were plenty of spectators around, and I'm really glad you had the rope instead of the wire.
