Don't waste your money on regestry cleaners and so forth.. you realy only need 2 programs, Antivirus (a good free one is AVG free (search it on google)) and a spyware removal tool (a good free one is lavasoft adaware SE google that too :))... otherwise do a couple of things, 1 clear your startup items (these are programs that run in the background that you realy don't need to run) I can give you a walk through if you tell me what Operating system you have (IE XP, 2000, 98, 98SE, 95 (if 95 get a new computer). and run scan disk and disk defrag. If you need more info let me know :)

cool.. then run MSCONFIG-- go to start- Run- type msconfig- it enter, go to the startup tab, most of the time none of these items are needed to run rour computer... so uncheck everything that you don't need to start up when you turn on your computer.. IE leave on your Mouse program if you have a special mouse or your antivirus.. everything else should go :) it will ask you to restart when you hit ok.. go ahead and restart when it comes back up put the checkmark in the box for don't show me this again and hit ok.. it should run a lot faster now :)

2k... I would suggest getting XP. Unfortunately 2k was realy not built for the end user experiance and more for the office enviroment. That said it does not acctualy have MSCONFIG as an option (off the shelf). You can use MSCONFIG from a widows XP machine to do the same thing http://downloads.thetechguide.com/msconfig.zip
installit and run it the same.. or you can go through your regestry and clean everything up.. good luck with that.. :)

There is a freeware program called Crap Cleaner, mainly meant for clearing MRUs and temporary files, that also has a registry cleaner utility to it. You can back up any registry keys that will be affected, so far no problems in the year or so I've been using it.
