Wire or synthetic winch cable?

Should I replace the current line, if so, with what?

In the link that Shane provided, it shows that the is nearly NO stretch in the rope at all, and so there is no recoil as a result. Based on that, I am sure your right Greg, shock load is a bad thing for the rope, and I am sure it is for cable too. I would dare say it isn't so great for the winch either :)
This was my fault, I was frustrated that I couldn't get things moving and just didn't use my head.

Sythetic Rope, I would NEVER give a tug on cable! Talk about loading a gun.... the recoil would kill you for sure! I know it can be repaired by weaving it, but I wonder if there might be other areas that got stressed or damaged at the time it broke. I likely will just buy a new one. Peace of mind is worth the cost of a new rope for me.

Send me a PM before you throw that old worthless broken winch line in the trash. :D

Amsteel blue 100' 5/16 with hawse for 160 plus 15 shipping on the electronic bidding site.

Or you could get some others to go in on a bulk roll of 5/16 600' from amsteel. for 820 and divide it up.

820 divided by 6 100 foot ropes is $136.67. The Hawse fairlead and assembled rope ends are well worth the extra 23 bucks.

JUst go to ebay and search amsteel blue or synthetic winch line. It will come up. the bulk was from the amsteel website but I found it on ebay today for cheaper. 600 feet for 680 bucks.. If you can't find it then I will try to get the item number from ebay.

My wire rope is trashed for pulling out XTUtah about 100 times last summer, so I just got the Amsteel Blue 5/16 100' with hawse on Ebay. That is a pretty good deal. I should have him pay for at least half...

Is there any tips that anyone has when installing the rope on the winch? I'm sure its not that big of deal but do you need to keep a lot of tension on the rope while winding it up etc?

Yes, you'll need to spool it with as much tension as you can put on the line. Rope will tend to find the "cracks" in the under wrappings when winching and then it's stuck and has to be pulled out with another rig.
