WJT Build

It was a long day on Saturday for Matt and I but by the end of the day the WJT was sitting on it's own suspension. Woot, so happy. Lot's of things to finish and tie up, but the end is finally in sight.

Just a quick follow up with no pics. We did get the beast finished and with Matt's help got the leading steering ram replaced and the front pinion shimmed up. I have lots of work to do on it tonight, i.e. mount winch, mount harnesses, hook up CB and test, heat shield fuel lines from new exhaust, wrap up a 100 little things.... Off to Moab in the morning. Hope it's not an all nighter.

Get some sleep tonight we will set the autopilot on the trucks and work on it on the way in the morning. I am pretty sure our trucks can drive themselves to Moab... Yeah...???

We made it to Moab and broke down on the test run on Friday. Replaced the starter switch and then the started Friday night in the parking lot, and made it out to lead Hell's Revenge on Saturday thanks to Matt, Dave, and Scott. Big thanks to all that helped. Found a lot more things that need attention, some serious, but it was predictable and wheeled fairly well for what it is. I think it will be a great rig one day.

Looking sweet Bart I keep thinking about selling the JK and building something similar to wheel with the family, although the JK wheels every obstacle on pritchett except the rock pile.... So I am torn on what to do

I guess what I am having a hard time with is selling the JK and building something that wont out wheel the JK

Funny you should bring this up. I haven't really touched it since Safari. It had a bad vibration in the rear at speed that we had to address and with all of my spring projects at home it's been just sitting. I was able to get a CV yoke from AA and put it on last week. I just picked up my rebuilt driveline yesterday, but I have a feeling it's not going to clear the rear suspension truss. Matt has been kind enough to let me park it at his shop for the past few weeks and I'm heading over there today to test fit the DL. If it works I'm heading out somewhere this weekend for a ride. If it doesn't clear we'll be moving my transfer case up an inch which will mean I'm cutting into the floor which will start a whole series of mods. We'll see today but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it fits.

Let's see. I added a CV to the rear driveline to eliminate the vibration. Then found that the rear suspension brace was in the way. I clearanced the brace a bit and for the first time since adding the rear 4 link it was vibration free. I took it Hanging Tree trail in July. The CV broke in some more and began hitting the brace again. I made the trail but broke the tranny from the contact of the CV on the brace. I have all the parts to fix it but haven't touched it since. I've had a bad back most of the summer and doc told me to take it easy and not wrench on anything for a while. I need to fix it because I'm trying to get down to Sand Hollow over Thanksgiving. Hopefully I can pull it apart in the next week or so and begin the repair.

Finally got this into Matt's shop and torn apart. The tranny guts were good and swapped into the 700r4 K case I got from Tacoma. Thanks again. Found out one of the contributing factors was the bolts on the Atlas adapter were loose. While I have a little time in the shop I've decided to tackle 2 problem areas, 1, address every leak on the Heep and 2. fixing the broken hub and outer stub shaft on the front axle. Of course every break is an opportunity to upgrade so I got some 35 spline alloy outers and a short side alloy inner, along with new Mile Marker selectable hubs from All Jeep. Thanks Davy.

The leaks are another matter. I had 4 leaks on the WJT and they were substantial, the tranny, the front inner axle, the rear 14 bolt pinion seal, and the steering box. While the front end was apart I replaced the inner axle seals and will clean, regrease, pack the wheel bearings and reseal. Next I will pull the pinion seal on the rear 14 bolt, put a new seal in, and then add the new pinion guard and axle truss tie in I got from RuffStuff, along with the new heavy diff cover.

After all of that is finished I will button every thing back up, and make sure it runs, then I'll pull the steering box and reseal it. It will be good to get this back on the trail/road again. I want to start the body work this winter.

Finally finished this part of the project last night.
Front axle: new alloy short side inner axle, new alloy 35 spline outters, new Mile Marker hubs, inner axle seals, repacked all bearings, diff fluid.
Rear axle: RuffStuff 14 bolt pinion guard and truss tie in, pinion seal, diff fluid.
700r4 tranny rebuilt in a different K case. Atlas sealed.
Opened up the rear wheel wells just a bit.

I still need to pull my steering box and reseal it, and then the beast should no longer have any leaks.

We plan to wheel over the Thanksgiving holidays and then I finally get to start the body transformation on the hood and grill. I'll be redoing the dash and building a new roll cage over the winter also. If anyone knows someone looking for a cheap cage, this one will be for sale, cheap.

It's always good to get those nagging problems like leaks fixed. Maybe we'll see you in Moab over TG. If that's where you're going of course :)

I guess it's been a long time since the last update. After some overheating problems and getting fed up with driving this with the FUGLY cage I took the front clip off and cut the old roll bar out. I did a little fine tuning on the engine also and got it running much much better. I figured that since I was replacing the radiator it was a good time to change the front clip out. I've been slowly make progress on this finally got the grill fit, the hood on, and the radiator mounted.

Over the weekend we started bending tube for the new roll bar. Thanks to Matt (UPNOVR) and Kevin for the knowledge and help on this. I can't believe the difference in looks that this cage is going to make. Have to have it (cage) finished and painted by Saturday night. Leaving for Winter 4x4 Jam on Wednesday next week. Have to get a couple of days of golfing in before the wheeling.
