Would an E locker from an '05 taco fit in my '85 front axle?

Well I am wondering if an E locker from a newer truck would fit/work in the front axle of my 85. thanks.

Cool. I knew I had to do the housing mod, for sure. And the wiring I figured I needed to switch it around too

I've never seen or heard of any issues with spline engagement in any minitruck stuff. The rear Landcruiser E-locker requires longer splines to function......

Cool good info to have. This is when i like working at a tire shop. Had a newer tacoma come in on a wrecker that had been hit in the rear end, so we swapped out the axles. (guess the housing was bent? Sure didnt look it though, looked like the leaf springs took most of the force) so hopefully the locker is still good. Boss said i could have it, so i will tear it apart and see what we come up with. Anyone know of a good quick way of testing the locker before i throw it in my axle/truck?

Cordless drill battery (9.6v-14.4v) and some wire scraps. Works like a dream.:) I even worked the locker in one of my rigs this way for a while instead of wiring it the right way...:ugh:

Just connect the wires directly to the motor harness (don't worry about the limit switch and all the other junk...)

elocker spline engagement

I have heard of issues of not having enough spline engagement in the locker. This can lead to broken shafts or lockers.
This is true for my '96 elocker from a 4runner in an ifs rear axle. I run it on 39s, and I am moderately hard on it. After 6 or 7 years a side gear let go. Pics and more info in this thread:

I run them front and rear. Never had any trouble up front, but if I ever get wider housings, I will get a longer shaft on one side.

One of the junkyard lockers I got had a broken side gear just like that--so the FZJ80 shafts don't engage any further than the mini shafts do. That's what I mean when I say "no problems". ;)

Breakage like that isn't (in my mind) an engagement issue, it's just finding the weak link in the locker. They rock, but they aren't as strong as some other options. I still like 'em though....

Yes, please do!! I already have an E locker in the rear axle of my truck, so far no problems, but if anything happens, I would like to get the chromo axles, and if they work, the longer shafts.

Agreed these are still very tough thirds for their size. I am still running them on my 39s. Its just one of those things in the back of my mind now...

I do think that another ~1/8" engagement would help eliminate this "weak point".

Alright fellas, got a couple more questions on this, as i prepare to get ready to do this swap,

1. Do the stock (or hardened shafts such as the dirty 30s, or the longfields) have the same spline count, and will fit into the e locker assembly?

2. After eyeballing my front axle, it looks like it might be a tight fit, to get the e locker motor into my axle housing, and clear my passenger side leaf springs, and perch (I will take a couple pics tomorrow if it helps) will they clear the springs and the perches? As far as i know, the springs are in the stock location.

that should be all for now, but ill ask if i have others

Yes to both questions. 8" elockers don't use different shafts than any other 8", and it will barely clear a stock leaf spring setup.

Awesome guys thanks!! Just gathering parts for my rebuild come this spring, (dads got the garage all winter to rebuild his jeep)

Yet another question, do I need to buy or swap my ring and pinion, since it is originally for a rear axle? Will my stock 4:10 gears fit in the e locker 3rd member? Thank guys I am probably bring a pest, but figured I would ask. I am still working on reading that article that was posted too
