I've been there. It seems like a pretty cool place. I actually changed out some tires I bought from a guy, and it was nice being able to do it myself and not have to pay out the nose for it. I was pulling 8 tires off rims and only putting 4 on, and every tire place I called charged full price or almost full price for just removing the tire. Anyway, they have lifts and stuff, and while I can't really afford to use them for everything, if I was doing a transmission or engine swap/replacement, I would probably go there for that reason.

didn't herzog say that he was going to ban the next person that brought this place up?

I forgot all about that. I remember a whole bunch of threads showing up one day from one particular user pimping that business and I got a little hot headed. He probably didn't even know better and we ran him off.

Regardless, let's try to keep this discussion more positive or at least informative. :p

Just an update to this.

I've been in contact with the General Manager of Wrench-It and we have discussed that the person "spamming" RME was actually a customer just trying to help out.
His methods were questionable but it's not fair to hold Wrench-It Center accountable for his actions.

I have access to our service dept after 6PM (not to mention techs). I once thought about this idea years ago modeled after what's on many military bases. I just couldn't figure how to turn a profit on it.

if I remember right they have a few computers that have access to a program that has all the info and hours and parts need to do just about any job... I think autozone has that same program that you can buy for 19.99 a year for one vehicle or 99 a yr for unlimited... if you had that one 3 computers and everyone that came in used it once and paid 5 bucks you would make a profit there eventually... now the big tools I think he rents them out so you pay 12 an hour for the shop space which comes with basic tool kit... the specialty tools you have to rent them out... so once again you're going to make a profit on that someday as well...

you just have them sign a waiver saying they are RESPONSIBLE FOR THEMSELVES and are not liable for any injury unless its caused by equipment break down...

If only it were that easy. A waiver means little in court and you can still be sued for absolutely anything. Welcome to our litigious society.

If only it were that simple. You have to also account for the monthly costs that will never go away. Wages, leases (building and equipment), ins, maintenance, supplies, service contracts, etc. The list goes on and on. You can't just count the one time costs and say that you'll break even eventually. Also, quite often, insurance is based on number of users. So the more users you have, the higher your insurance costs are.

Hey Sami, I was being sarcastic and I apologize if any of my comments were construed as negative. Any one who knows me well enough knows that I can make anything look good, but mechanically I'm borderline retarded myself. I gave up on doing my own mechanical work years ago, I'm more likely to ruin it than fix it. So in my mind this places direct competition is the do it yourself wood shop where you can break each of your fingers individually with a hammer while trying to build a swing set for the kids for a bargain rate of only $10 per hour.

As far as a business idea, Caleb and Kurt already posted my concerns. It costs a lot to provide a facility like that. I don't even know how you would get the insurance coverage you'd need. You can have all the waivers in the world, but that won't stop the guy's family who died when his own car fell on him from filing a huge lawsuit against you because his wife never signed a waiver.

I used to work at Park's Sportsman in the ski rental shop and I had a customer that was a judge. He laughed as he signed the release waiver. In his words, "This waiver is worth no more than the paper it's written on."
