XJ engine interchange question

What year 4.0's would be a direct swap into a '98 Cherokee? Wasn't there a model change just a year or 2 eairler? Would a '96 engine swap right in?

as far as I know, yes....haven't heard of any big changes in bell housings or starters......

There are a few changes, but all will bolt up....I just put a 96 ZJ 4.0 in a 90 XJ. I did use the 90 manifolds, acc, and inj. Those are the main differences ou will find between years. As well, the flexplate/flywheels have different # of holes for the CPS.
