XJ Gears and Swap

Okay, I have heard that the 4 banger stick shift XJ (1988 or so) came with 4.10 gears in it. Is this true?
If so, I can easily just swap those into my current XJ (1990) with carrier and everything right? both front and rear?

As far as I know yes. Look for a dana 44 and just swap the whole axle.

I'm pretty sure as well that you can do that.....just make sure you set everything up right again. I would guess that you would have to since you are changing housings.

Oh, and a 44 all the way....I like the one in my XJ :p

Ahhh I would do a 44 all the way if I could find one...I have a 4 banger at my dads shop that is there just for parts....:) A scout 44 rear swaps in pretty easy does it not?

Scout is a different bolt pattern. (5 on 5.5") They're a little narrow, but work fine with 'offset' wheels and after you've moved the spring perches. (the question there is what are you doing in the front?----Waggy D44 with a 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern swap?)

When I went to 4.11 gears, I used the 4 cyl. gears. I knew they'd only be temporary, but I had good luck with them until my housing bent and spilled my carriers guts into the gears.

I did find my D44 in pick'n pull. I've seen at least 3 or 4 there over the years. Check it out.

Couple of questions about the donor.

Does it still have the rims? what about the transfer case?

Good luck with the swap.

Most of the 4.10 gear sets that I have seen on xjs are in the 84-86 range. My 86 has them. Almost all of the newer ones came with 3.55 ratios. If someone came up with a set of 4.10 gears for my xj d44 that I'm fixing up I would donate my d35 rear with 4.10 gears. :)

I got mine out of a YJ for my XJ for nothing. Just look around, they're free everywhere, and there was no shortage of 4 banger YJ's back then.

My first XJ, 1984, had 3.73s with an auto and the 2.8.....so maybe the 2.5's had the 4.10s. My buddy had an 85 with a manual and it ran 3.55's in it. I'm pretty sure that almost all 2.5 L XJ's ran the 4.10s, like the YJ's. I could be wrong though :)

They also came in some of the 2.8 powered ones like my 86.

Every 2.5L I've ever looked at (mostly in the junkyard) had the 4.10 gears.

Any chance I could pull some stuff off of it?

Specifically
Front drive shaft
Front tow hooks
Rear hitch reciever
It's not mine, so I cannot say, I will check with the owner. I know front tow hooks are gone, and no rear hitch either.
