XJ Help

Okay, dunno what the Jeep is doing. Earlier tonight my Jeep cut out on power while driving. Just feels like the motor suddenly loses spark or something similiar. I am just looking for ideas on what I can start checking to see what might be going on. I am going to check the rear axle just to be sure that somehow I am not destroying the ring and pinion (no weird noises, but it can't hurt to check.)

Specs

1989 Jeep Cherokee
4.0 L non HO motor
AW4 trans

Any ideas people?

Cap, Rotor, wires ( should have less than 7,000 Ohms per foot), Plugs. i would check all of those first, after that i would start looking at ur Crankshaft Position sensor and go from there but thats just my two cents

yep i would have to say start with CPS then go to auto shutdown relay in the relay box(don't know if the renix had this) check your heat ballast as well.

The cap, plugs, wires and rotor are all new within the last 10K miles. The ballast resistor is newish (within 2 years). I'll check the CPS and the fuel pressure.....might be coming over to your house James!

Any other suggestions? I was thinking it might be worth while to replace the TPS and IAC just for fun, but not if those wouldn't affect something like this.

i don't believe the TPS will cause it to stall like that really controls shifting of the trans more then anything.i would have to go with CPS as the cause you can test it with a multi meter.

Ill concur with the rest either the CPS or the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). Last resort I would check battery terminals and make a sure a hard bump didnt loosen or dislodge one of the connections. Check the ground to body under the oassenger side relay block. If you were lucky enough to have a PO replace the connection from the block to the body, you may be loosing your gorund. If its still on the block, double check its connection.

Yep, CPS....Changed it many times....DEALER ONLY as the folically challenged Marc already said....Also check the cps plug and the other 2 wire plug that sits with it in the harness. Towards the back of the manifold on the drivers side. Otherwise, check fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pump relay, and as suggested, auto shut down relay....the relays are just standard bosch ones, no need to pay $$$$ for a application specific one at the parts store.

Seemed like it was running fine when you past me on I15 yesterday, and didn't even wave:(

Haha.....I didn't think that you saw me either cause I looked over and you just were staring straight ahead with a mean look.

Guess that I willl check out my CPS plug and such. I'm not sure if it was replaced with a dealer CPS or cheapo....can't hurt to change it out with a nice new one.
