XJ seats in a TJ--anybody ever done it?

My recently-purchased 1997 TJ driver's seat vinyl is cracked (aren't they all?) and the foam is coming out. It's bad enough that I've decided to just replace my vinyl seats with cloth ones. Trouble is, OEM cloth TJ seats in good condition seem to command a king's ransom... and I'm a pauper.

By comparison, XJ seats are downright cheap and relatively plentiful. So why not swap in a pair of XJ buckets? I've taken a tape measure to the seats themselves and their dimensions are nearly identical. I see that the XJ seat brackets are substantially different from my TJ, though.

So, can I take an XJ seat, remove its bracket, attach my TJ bracket to it, and install it in my TJ? Has anyone here done this? I figure I cannot be the first guy that has ever thought of this swap.

I have a buddy that had some nice cloth tj seats. If your interested I'll check for ya.

That's a kind gesture, and I appreciate it. Still, I'm worried the TJ seats will be out of my current budget. But let me know if it is convenient for you to do so.
