xj speedo sensor

has anyone had their speedo sensor go out? when it goes bad does it just stop working or can it be tempermemtal?

I've never had one go bad. Is the computer showing sensor codes or is the speedometer not working ? It could be the speedometer too. I have several sensors and gauge clusters in the basement if you wanted to test them out.

well it happened when i put my sye kit in i didnt place the sensor in the right position and it ate all the teeth off the gear on the bottom of the sensor so i bought a new gear and now it will work for like 45 seconds and then nothing for a while then it will work for a bit again and yes im throwing a cel i pulled the code and it just says speedo sensor malfunction so i am thinkin i might have damaged the sensor when i ground the teeth off? if you have a working sensor i could try that would be great i dont wanna go spend 40 bucks on one just to find out its not bad

sometimes mine wont work at all and my check engine light will turn on but then after turning the jeep off and then starting it back up the check light will go away and the speedo will work fine again, i dunno what it is but its not huge problem for me so i have never tried to fix it..

What year is your jeep ? I have several from different years.

its a 98 aw4 with the np231 i think one from any 4.0l 96to01 shoyld work as long as its from an auto with the np231

I'll have to see if my son saved the one from the 96 auto/231 he put in his comanche.

i swapped the sensor out and its the same deal must be a bad wire or something?
