I've got a 87 XJ with a 4.0 litre w/ manual. I believe I have an NP 231. Does anyone know if a NP 242 will work? Are the splines the same?

If it's the same spline, it'll work fine. You'll need one from the same 'era'. I think that was up to '90. My '91 had a different spline.

4WD Full time has a 'viscous coupler' that lets you drive it on the street in 4WD high.
Both cases were available in 21 and 23 spline versions.
