xj vs yj springs.

So I know the xj springs have the offset for moving the axle either forward or back. They are also are softer? I am told they are. Are they stiff enough to support a v8 drive train, full interior with tools and heavy body armor? Are yj springs a viable option for supporting that weight instead?

I have not run YJ springs but have had GREAT success with the XJ springs. The Old Man Emu springs are a great option and reasonably priced. They are strong enough on their own to support the V8 and winch on the front. I have also used NEW XJ springs with an additional main leaf (cut the small loop end off and wrap the big bushing end around the small bushing end of your XJ spring. Redrill the center hole on the old main leaf to match the new springs and you're good to go). I'm just pulling my XJ springs out for a radius arm front and triangulated 4 link in the rear with JK coils. You'd be welcome to come check mine out if you like.

FWIW, I had TERRIBLE luck with used, stock take off springs. I'd bend them in a few days

If I was starting over where I assume you are, I'd just buy the Old Man Emu springs and run them vs. reworking some stock ones.

I think xj springs will be good for the front but the rear is where I am worried about the weight. When loaded it will have probably 4 people, camping gear, tools, parts, hard top and doors (in cold and bad weather) and the rear rack will have full size spare and at least 5gal fuel and 5 gals of water. All of that would be at minimum. I will probably end up building a smaller trailer to tow behind it too.

How are GW springs on flex? I know they support a ton of weight.

I haven't had any issues with weight in the rear. I did have to add an extra leaf to the front with my older set.

I didnt like Waggy springs just due to availability. They're not hard to get but the XJ set is 1 day away wherever you might be.

Weight is not really a concern since there are a bunch of heavy XJ's on the trail. With armor and loaded with everyone's tools they can get to more than 5k lbs.

My XJ pack is a couple stock packs combined with an extra main leaf cut down as Marc described. I added three leafs for a total of 7. It works.

I just changed out my stock springs for a set of re3.5 in springs. They are awesome. I had 5 people in my xj and went for the gusto. They worked better than expected. Btw long canyon road in moab is washed out and the bypass was a rocky extreme mess. That was the proving ground for the new springs. Very happy.
