xj won't start after drivetrain work

okay so i took out my tranny, t-case and oil pan to put in the new clutch and a new chain and some other work for the t-case and i cleaned the oil pan. i finally got them all back together and in last night and i went to start it and IT WON'T START!!!! my jeep has never had a problem starting before so i figured it just needed a second, but nope.
so i got out my spark plug wire tester and hooked it up to the outside of a wire and the light flashes if there is spark... i saw no light. i tried the tester on the saturn and it lights up if you get it within an inch or two of the wires. so the tester is working fine, but the jeep is not .(duh)
if you don't want to read the rest just tell me what you think is wrong.
first of all, i have a question. while i was taking off the flywheel bolts my friend had a wrench on the bolt on the front of the crank to hold it still. does that affect the timing? he said it does but i am not so sure.
i was trying to figure out what could be wrong... but i can't figure it out. i plugged in everything i took out including the O2 sensor, the wire that goes into the t-case top, the speedo gear wire, and the weird plug type thing on the side of the tranny, i think it is the shift light or something. also, everything has fluid and the starter sounds like it is turning the flywheel just fine.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE DAMN THING?
also, the clutch does not work... i bled it and everything but with the clutch pedal out we can still roll the jeep back. what else is required when installing the clutch, is there a cable to tighten or what? my dad is not familiar with hydraulic clutches really...he is old.

IF YOU CAN HELP, PLEASE DO. EVEN IF IT IS JUST A SIMPLE SUGGESTION!
i am going to troubleshoot tonight.
thanks,
nate hurst

Isn't this Tech talk?

I would have to say that if you don't have spark......FIND OUT WHY! pull a wire and crank the engine with the wire next to the manifold. see if you have spark, Did you plug the crank position sensor back in???

I'm not reading the whole thing,

But the first thing that pops into my head is neutral safety switch.
first thng that pops into my head is a Fuse. When I put my motor in, it ran great, then I had to change the intake manifold, and after I did, it wouldn't start. Same thing, no spark. I forgot to hook up a small ground wire, and it tripped the fuse.

cps

haha i just looked up the cps in the book and went out there and the wire is busted... beyond fix so i will go get one from autozone right now. 40 bucks phhhhh.

would the cps prevent spark? in the book it says that it is used to advance or retard ignition timing and control fuel injector pulses.... so does that mean it will start when i get a new one?

thanks,
nate

Not to brag or anything.........BUT WHOS THE MAN????????

Oh yeah, it will prevent it from starting....the CPS provides the PCM with the location of the crank in relation to the cam/s, thus allowing the PCM to pulse injectors and send a signal to the ignition module

Shawn---if the Neutral Safety Switch were bad or not plugged in, it shouldn't crank.

I'm late on this topic, but I second the CPS. It will cause it to not spark. Computer controls are great, aren't they. ;)

words cannot explain how much i love you jk. YOU ARE INDEED THE MAN!!!! i got the new cps for 40 bucks, plugged it in and the baby started right up!

okay now onto the clutch... i know there is a clutch expert out there. okay so the clutch is in there, thats a start right? but anyway i put it all in good and it is aligned and the tranny went on perfect, then we bled the clutch quite a bit and i thought it would be fine but it doesn't work. clutch pedal in and clutch pedal out makes no difference. the book says something about the external mounted clutch release cylinder... but i think mine is internal. damn this was my first time installing a clutch so i probably did something little and stupid (just like the whole cps thing).
let me know what you think. it is an ax5 or 15

thanks,
nate
