Proud father moments

So Lucas and I are not hikers. Plain and simple. We prefer horsepower to manpower. It does not help that he is only 12 years old and about 25 pounds heavier than me. Our deacons group hiked down the Mogollon Rim to Horton Springs. The trail is only 1 mile long, but drops about 1200 vertical feet. Both of us were totally done after just the decent. It took About an hour and a half to get to the springs. We hung out for a bit and eat oranges and refilled our water bottles where the spring came out of the mountain. Then we started back up. It was slow going but we made it. The “trail” is not much of anything. Rough rocks almost the entire way. We lost the trail several times. It was bad. I kept wondering if a helicopter would even be able to get to us. I walked behind him with my hands on his hips most of the time. We made it to the top in just under three hours. We gave each other a big hug and talked about doing hard things and remembering this for ever.

Us close to the trailhead. The spring was down in the valley in about the middle of this picture.

My youngest boy shot in the Utah state cowboy action shoot last weekend. He took 1st in the youth class and 19th overall. My dad won the senior class. 3 of my boys have been state champions with their grandpa and 2 of those I was able to take state also. This kid can shoot better than his brothers though. He will be beating me before he can drive.

It has been a busy time for us with graduation and mission stuff. He is going to Quito Ecuador, by the way.

Crazy story though. His girlfriend opened her mission call last night. She got called to Quito Ecuador. The exact same mission! She enters the MTC the same day he leaves the MTC.

My good friends boy went there and totally loved it. The outskirts are crazy poor but kind. Good for him.

Jonah pitched for the first time yesterday. He’s been playing baseball for a long time.
I’m not a baseball fan and I haven’t been able to help him much.

Seeing that first strike out was pretty dang awesome though

Something awesome about youth baseball. It's not the parents that are awesome, they've totally f*cked that game up. (necessary apologies to sane parents that don't INSIST their kids is a future MLB player) Just something pure about being on the field and learning how a team works as other kids are learning with you.

One common thing I see with people in this group is accountability.

I am pretty proud of how my kids turned
out. My dad’s friend got me involved with racing motorcycles because I was a handful. If I wanted to ride or race I had to be accountable for my actions. I did not understand that fully until I was an adult. This is the main reason I got both my son and daughter involved in racing. Over the last 15 years I have spent a retirements worth of money that I could have left for them on teaching them 1 thing…….how to fail and then get up and succeed. I have enjoyed that time and know that they will not need that money since they will be successful on their own.

I also think kids that do physically and mentally taxing things are just better people. Racing is physically hard and you absolutely will get hurt. Facing that willingly and for nothing other than the sense of accomplishment is probably a mental condition but it makes good people.

These 2 have spent several days up on the roof working with me. This day we started at 5:30 am and knocked off at 6:30 pm. No complaints, just working. It was really nice to be able to work on fiddly things like vents (this house has 9 roof penetrations and 8 attic vents!) and have a bunch of shingles get laid while I was busy. Then my son went to camp for the weekend, so it was just my daughter and me on Friday and Saturday. Over 10 hour days both days.

I remember being forced to reroof our house by @bobn when I was 13. It was a good experience and I learned a lot. But my main takeaway was that given the choice between roofing and playing Command & Conquer: Red Alert, always choose the latter. 😁

I was not given a "choice"...

And this is why you live somewhere where there is no internet or phone service so your kids can be kids again without XBOX and social media.
