I hate Classifieds Lowballers...

Here's a good one: With the Jeep build wrapping up it was time to sell off the Yukon that I pulled the drivetrain out of. My son Lucas has been trying hard to earn money to buy an electric bike. I told him he could be in charge of selling the yukon and he could keep the money we got. He put it on Offer Up and for the last couple weeks has learned all about the frustration this thread is about. Tire kickers and low ballers. It's been a mess.
Wednesday, a guy actually tries to call him first and talk about it. Luke was in school so he didn't answer. The guy sends him pictures of his yukon that is in ROUGH shape and says he wants to buy ours and swap all the parts over to his. I was surprised to see that our yukon was probably in better shape, minus the drive train. So he's fine with the price and all that and begs Luke to hold it for him till Thursday. Then we find out the guy is in California and would drive out here yesterday morning. I reminded Lucas that I wouldn't be home from work till about 5pm so I probably wouldn't be able to help. I ended up getting home at about 430 and then find out the guy is just leaving CA. I'm not happy about that because it would be 1030 before he arrived. We suggested he get a hotel room and we finish the deal in the morning. He said he had to have the "dolly" back by 7am. I told Lucas to go to bed and I would take care of it. I get a text from the guy saying he's running late and it would be more like 12am. He finally shows up at about 1220am this morning. He was actually driving his yukon! It was all beat up. Missing front bumper, the driver side headlight assembly was gone....... list goes on. It smelled bad of burning oil. Then I noticed the little vehicle dolly he was towing behind it. I told him I was surprised he brought it and not a trailer. I told him I have no idea how the rear tires are and that the wheels are only held on with 2-3 lug nuts. He said he had some. I made sure he knew it was all at his own risk. He agreed.
He and his wife walk around it for a minute and then paid me. I hand him the title. I had my truck hooked up to it with a strap and we then pulled it down my long driveway out to the road. We line it up to the dolly and try to push it on. The Yukon is obviously way too wide to fit on it. I'm just in the back pushing when he tells me to. We try 3-4 times and then they say they just need to jack the yukon up and roll the dolly under it.
That's when I called it a night and wished them good look and headed in. I made sure to close my driveway gate. They were on their own. I was cleaned up and in bed just before 1am. I couldn't sleep all night as I laid there wondering what they were going to do. I mean they should have noticed how narrow the dolly was compared to their yukon when they hooked it up in CA.
I was pleased to notice no text messages waiting for me this morning when I got out of bed. The driveway gate was just as I left it and everything was normal as I left this morning. Then as I pull onto the street I notice the Yukon sitting right where I left it. As I drove past it I noticed the front bumper was gone as well as both headlight assemblies. At least its still sitting on tires and wheels.
I think I'll let Lucas take over from here.

Sounds like the tweakers who bought my 2500HD parts truck a few years ago, after I stripped the 14 bolt out and sold it as a running drivetrain donor. They were trying to finagle a 6 lug 1/2 ton axle under it in my driveway when I kicked them off my property. Got a letter in the mail a couple weeks later that my truck was impounded for being abandoned.

Did they leave the title at least, so you can resell it?

Plot thickens! I asked Lucas to reach out to him. He got arrested last night! There’s a state trooper sub station at the end of my street. I’m guessing a cop drove by and investigated. He was legit with me so he must have had a warrant or something else. His Yukon got impounded. He trying to get it out and get a tow truck over to grab mine. 😂

This story wins the thread. Holy crap.

Closure!!!
I got home from work and they were out there hooking up a HF tow bar to my old Yukon. I asked what happened. He said they decided to take the dolly to his cousins house in Scottsdale because it was too narrow, even though it had to be back in CA this morning. At some point they got to talking to a cop. He didn’t have ID and somehow she “only had her aunts ID”. The cop arrested both of them for identity theft and impounded their Yukon. They got out and got the their car back and picked up the HF tow bar. So they are planning on flat towing that thing all the way back to CA! This adventure is too much for me and I’m hardly involved.
Anyways, now it’s gone and we’ve blocked their number. 😎

My tweaker story is nowhere near as juicy, but I’ll share anyways.

Had an ‘04 2500HD I paid $500 for, absolute piece of crap, was a bank repo from local credit union. Sold the 14 bolt for $700, then listed the rest of the truck for $1200. Some tweakers came, paid cash, told me he had to get money from his mom, which I thought strange. They told me they had a trailer for it, but never brought one. What they did bring, was a 1/2 ton coil sprung 4 link axle from a Yukon or Tahoe. They tried to finagle it under the truck. I told them several times to get it off my property, and they took a few days. The last straw was after 4 or 5 days….I told them if it wasn’t gone within the day, I was getting a flatbed to tow it away. They actually came and tried to drive it….and promptly blew the rear u joint. It sat at the end of the street for another day before they came and got it. Few weeks later, I got a letter in the mail “my truck” was impounded. I called them and the DMV, was informed if I didn’t want it, they would just auction it. I wasn’t going to pay storage or tow fees, so I let it go.

Here’s a video of the tweakers handy work. Enjoy! They also left cigarette butts all over my driveway and that REALLY pissed me off.

That’s amazing. First thing I did this morning was to report it sold to the DMV. I did not want it to come back and haunt me.
We learned this lesson too. Ian sold @moab_cj5/ @TRD270's old Buick to a girl when he was done with it, she was kinda sketchy about the whole thing but he wanted the cash so he put up with her nonsense. We got a letter a couple weeks ago informing us that it was impounded and to come and get it. She'd driven it off, never titled it in her name (probably wasn't insured either), then got in an accident and presumably abandoned it. We told DMV it was sold and gave them her name and I hope that's the end of it.

I sold my first two hauler trailer (26' bumper tow Paiute) to a returning veteran that had just bought a truck in Phoenix but lived in NC. He met me in Grand Junction, gave me the cash and I gave him the title/trailer. He wanted the plate to go to NC.

I thought that a plausible thing since he's driving 8-9 states away and he's a serviceman. About a year later I got a letter from the Port Authority in New Jersey telling me that I skipped paying the toll for a bridge. Pictured was my trailer and a nice $800 charge...

I ALWAYS take the plate now AND report the vehicle sold/transferred
