Jeep Stretch YJ "Might as well" Build

One of the main goals of this build was more occupant and cargo space which means mounting a fuel cell in the back is not an option. What I didn't anticipate when I decided to stretch the tub below the step, was that by keeping the fuel tank I would need to clearance the front of the wheel well...

Made some progress on reinforcing the shock mounting tube.

    New to area

Welcome! Fall is a great time to be out wheeling in Utah. There are several Offroad FB groups based in your area that you might consider checking out to find impromptu trail runs. For fun day or overnight runs, you could go east into the mountains for some spectacular scenery. Slightly more...

Jeep Stretch YJ "Might as well" Build

What do you guys think of this? Will this offer the needed support to the shock mounting tube? I'm a little wary of putting supports in this area for safety sake, but as you can see it allows room for passengers noggins. Another option would be to tie to the frame here.

Jeep Stretch YJ "Might as well" Build

I can rotate it so that it clears the pitman arm, but I will have to bump stop it to keep it from the lower fitting on the steering box. My concern about simply rotating it to clear is it only has a few degrees of rotation before it would once again be into the pitman arm in front or track bar...

Jeep Stretch YJ "Might as well" Build

Ok, I need some help and fresh eyes. I mounted up the hydro assist cylinder but didn't pay enough attention to the hose fittings. Now I have hose fitting interference at the pitman arm and the steering box at full bump. Is it ok to run the cylinder backwards, mounted to the tie rod like...

Jeep Stretch YJ "Might as well" Build

Spent my time yesterday removing the botched paint job from the roll cage. Got about 1/2 of it off, I'll work on it more tomorrow. I'm hoping tomorrow I receive the rebuild kit for the steering gear. Then I can put some effort into the hydro assist setup. I've been trying to think of a way to...

Thanks. Most of it has been fun, though there are days I want to set it on fire, watch it burn, and go buy a finished rig.

I decided to run a Northstar AGM battery, from what I have read they have a outstanding reputation. Radiator is a Flexalite LS swap radiator/fan combo. For some reason Flexalite prefers a stand alone built-in temp control unit over using the PCM to control fan on/off. I chose to remove the fan...

The two harnesses are thinned and wiring routed. The 2006 LM7 5.3 fires and sounds pretty good. Such a good feeling when you hear a motor fire for the first time! I used a Walbro 255 in-tank fuel pump, Corvette fuel filter/regulator, Russel fuel lines and connections.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you run this in the OEM cast aluminum F-body pan? Is this all you do for oil control, or do you run an accumulator as well?

How would be the best way to address it? Hydraulic bump stops, brace from the c pillar, a brace to the frame in between b and c pillars, other?

What's everyones thoughts on CO's mounted to the cage? Will this hold up long term? It's obviously not a race car, intended use is mostly crawling, but I like speed, and want to be able to have some fun through high speed sections.

Jeep Stretch YJ "Might as well" Build

Thanks Bart, I have to admit I've made lots of mistakes I'm aware of (probably even more I'm unaware of). These are mostly around sequence of the build. I've had too much rework going back to fit something I should have planned for initially. I'll need to repaint the cage. I was hoping the...

Clearanced the hood and mocked up a piece of cardboard to transfer to aluminum that will improve the body lines. At some point I would like to build in a 4" flare to give it back a finished look.

I did, both paint and primer are Rustoleum oil base. I did custom mix the color using two Rustoleum oil base products, maybe they don't get along?

Do you think the paint will cure on its own? It's been over a week now, but I'd rather deal with it once it cured vs. try to remove it as it is.

When I painted the cage something went very wrong. Initially the paint spray looked acceptable, but as it dried some of the paint started to wrinkle. Over a week later the paint is dry on the exterior but still wet under the surface in the wrinkled areas. Any ideas on what I did wrong? Edit...

Thanks guys. Like I said, if I hadn't received the encouragement I never would have tried. Yet another learning at how skilled the guys that build these things are.
