emergency communication with no cell coverage--what have you done?

Thanks, John. I value your opinion on this subject very highly. I appreciate everybody's remarks. I spent about an hour and a half surfing around reading lots of info about 10m mobile operation. Taking into account what you guys have said, plus what 10m mobile operators say, plus the...

emergency communication with no cell coverage--what have you done?

I forgot to say: if I do end up going with a quad band rig, I'll upgrade to a General license so as to gain full 10m privileges. I've heard others say this, though when you're in a remote canyon somewhere I still don't think this has a high probability of working. (shrug)

emergency communication with no cell coverage--what have you done?

Background: I have a technician ham license. I have two HTs. For better, longer-range communication I bought a 2m mobile transceiver (FT-2900R) and just installed it in my commuter car--it works great. Now I'm planning to buy a dual band transceiver to put in my Jeep (it already has a CB...

Northern Utah Mini-QTD, Sept 26th & 28th, American Fork Canyon

I agree with all the above. I'm glad I made it out, even if I had to bail on the service project.

Northern Utah Mini-QTD, Sept 26th & 28th, American Fork Canyon

I'm planning to be there Friday night for the classes. BTW, your original post said we'll meet at Dutchman Flat (see map), but then there was no map. Now I know where I think Dutchman Flat is, but maybe you are thinking of a slightly different location. Care to add any clarification? ;) For...

School me on registering my stupid hybrid in a non-emissions county

This isn't answering the OP's question, but it is relevant to the topic: I frequent a variety of automobile forums. My most-visited one is The Car Lounge, which is a "non-denominational" forum with thousands of members around the globe. Long story short, the Civic hybrid has a well-known...

Installing mobile ham radio -- everything was going great UNTIL...

UPDATE, aka Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet I initially liked John's idea of going underneath, but as I looked into it I decided to stick to the original plan. When I got home from work today, I pulled the wheel and removed the fender liner. This turned out to be the right idea, as it gave me...

Teen crashes SUV after passenger sets his armpit hair on fire

It's okay. Think of all the company you'll have in Hell! Please tell your fishing buddy that I am sorry for giving you this idea.

The PAVEMENT thread: Cars, Racing, Drives, Speed...

This. (Okay, so I've never actually gone on one of these group drives with Steve. Nevertheless, I always imagined they were relaxed drives to admire the scenery more than a group of dolts "racing" around trying to crash into each other.)

Installing mobile ham radio -- everything was going great UNTIL...

Oh, hey, way to think outside the box (or under it). Going underneath never even occurred to me. Nah, it's not that I'm a real ham--in fact, I'm about as far from a real ham as you can be. It's just that it's only a $2000 car... so what do I have to lose?

Installing mobile ham radio -- everything was going great UNTIL...

I've finally purchased everything I need so as to install a mobile ham radio into one of my vehicles. I decided to put it in my Protege since that is my daily driver and would thus give me the most opportunity for use. (My plan is to ultimately purchase another radio for the Jeep.) Anyway...

The PAVEMENT thread: Cars, Racing, Drives, Speed...

Some other internet friends told me to just think of it as a FWD Miata. :D 2003 was the last year for the Protege; it was replaced in 2004 by the 3 (which I am not nearly so fond of). Here's a lame picture I recently took in my driveway: Yeah, I know. :( What street car do you have? (I...

The PAVEMENT thread: Cars, Racing, Drives, Speed...

Oh, hey--I have a fuel efficient DD street car now! It's a 2003 Protege LX 5-speed, completely stock, but it does have a sunroof so it makes me happy (not to mention the 34 mpg, which blows away 14 mpg in the Jeep and 11 mpg in the Suburban). Schedule permitting, perhaps I'll tag along on your...

    Lets talk small diesel engines

I'm going to offer advice in a different way. Before you choose an engine, determine your exact desires and goals for this project. Why do you want a diesel engine? I'm no diesel expert, but here are the only reasons I can imagine wanting one in a project car: 1) to maximize fuel economy...
