    The backpacking thread

I'm "fairly" frugal compared to most people. I'll drop good coin on quality products but don't like wasting money on stuff. My wife on the other hand is the very definition of frugal which is both a good and a bad thing. :)

    The backpacking thread

I've got a Gregory Fury 40 that I picked up awhile back. It's a decent pack for cheap and somewhat comfortable if you can keep your overall pack weight down. It's a little on the small size so you'll need to be creative with your tent selection and how you pack it. You may want to split up the...

    Camping Tips: The Sleeping Pad

Have any of your that are using the Xtherm also used an exped down mat? I have an exped that I picked up from backcountry and am tempted to exchange it for an extherm.

    The Snowshoeing Thread

Really wish I could have joined everyone. Looks like a perfect night. On the plus side my wife is a machine and gave birth to an 8lbs 13oz baby girl in two hours flat after the very first contraction. Pretty sure she's tougher than me in every way possible. She didn't even seem to get winded or...

Did you wear a beanie to bed? What clothes were you wearing? What will you do differently next time?

anyone here a teacher or spouse a teacher?

Agreed, but it's not just their teachers, it's also plenty of the staff. One area where apparently Utah districts do pay well is Administration... which from what I've seen is overpaid. Utah's problem is supply and demand. Even though there is a decent demand for teachers, the supply of...

    Computer help. Adding hard-disk space.

Yep. I've got a 256GB 840 Pro in my main box and it's been working great. Very snappy performance.

    Computer help. Adding hard-disk space.

The pro is the fastest and allows for more writes to the drive because it uses a more expensive type of storage medium than the standard 840 and 840 evo. It will be the most reliable of the three but honestly you'd have to be writing a LOT of data to the drive every single day to ever "wear out"...

    Computer help. Adding hard-disk space.

I'm a fan of Samsung SSD's. The 840 evo is fine for 99% of people even though it uses TLC NAND. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7173/samsung-ssd-840-evo-review-120gb-250gb-500gb-750gb-1tb-models-tested The 840 Pro is one of the, if not the best overall drive on the market right now.

Wide mouth nalgene, upside down and with old wool socks covering them. Packed in my backpack or in my sleeping bag and I'm golden for the most part.

Where to get 39's dismounted near Sandy

I may be selling my pitbull maddogs since I never have the chance to wheel anymore and my truck needs some TLC that I don't have time or money for at the moment. Anyone recommend somewhere that can handle 39's and won't charge me an arm and a leg?

Any other ultralight backpackers on RME?

I hate bugs, rodents and other creepy crawlies. I know that tarps are much lighter and very versatile but I'm a tent kinda guy for that reason. I just need to pull the trigger on a new backpacking tent since I'm currently without one that will work well with my smaller backpacks and more and...

New bag, WM Megalite or Zpacks? Fear based decision?

I am very interested in the zpacks bag but am curious on the sizing. The girth sizing is 56" or 61", which are you using? I'm just curious if I could get away with 56" and still be comfortable. I think my current Marmot bag is either 56" or 58" and is fairly tight on my shoulders. I'll have to...

Any other ultralight backpackers on RME?

I need to look into that tent. Similar looking to the stratospire2 but cheaper. I like the dual side entry, makes things MUCH easier. Thanks for the recommendation!

Any other ultralight backpackers on RME?

They do a good job and recommend quality gear but be careful when looking at their choices, especially for backpacks. I own a Gregory Baltoro 75 and an Osprey Aether 70 which are both awesome packs and highly rated... but they are both HEAVY TANKS that are built to handle 40lbs+ for years of...

Any other ultralight backpackers on RME?

The entire entry setup of the fly creek sucks. You're spot on about water coming into the tent. My brother and I used the tent and honestly it did it's job but for the money I just felt like there had to be better options out there, back to REI it went.

Any other ultralight backpackers on RME?

Lets talk UL tents. I'm in the market for a large 2 man to 3 man tent. I'll be backpacking with my wife so it needs a floor (IE no tarps), double walled preferably and no more than 4.5 lbs total (ground cloth, stakes, etc). I would love to do a single man tent and be carry a lot less weight but...

    2014 camping

No grizzly bears at this time. There were talks about reintroducing them like they did with the wolves in the 90's but for now only black bears, wolves, cougars and moose to worry about. Of the bunch the moose are probably the most dangerous statistically. We were high enough in elevation that...
