With the prices of used sprinter vans borderline comical, I'm hoping to buy an old cool vehicle that I can restore and turn into a cool delivery vehicle/marketing piece to take to festivals. I figure if I have to spend 20k+ on a decent sprinter, I could probably build something cool for that...

On a less macro level, if you were self sufficient it would not matter. Point is, modern countries are no more able to be self sufficient than modern households. It would take the entire population accepting drastically lower standards of living to achieve. I suspect civilization isn't ready...
